영문 초록

This study investigated the perceptions of English education in Korean Elementary schools that native English speaking teachers(NESTs) and Korean English teachers (KETs) have towards one another. Two native English teachers and two Korean English teachers have participated in this study in which they were each interviewed twice. During interviews the participants revealed their perceptions toward English language teaching in Korea and their difficulties they have in co-teaching. The result shows that NESTs tend to think the teaching style of KETs is teacher-centered, characterized by ‘memorization and ‘repetition’, while their own class is centered on ‘critical thinking skills and creative method’. These stereotypes resemble the discourses criticizing ‘Orientallism’and ‘Native speakerism’ which reveals that such stereotyping is neither original nor creative. Also, KETs have the stereotype that NESTs are not skilled in English teaching in terms of perceiving Korean students needs and characteristics. However, NESTs and KETs both categorize each other’s teaching style and their culture based on the essentialistic view centered around unproblematic Self and problematic Others. This could be to resist each other’s power and maintain and hegemony in co-teaching which obstruct them forming a close relationship necessary for successful co-teaching.
