영문 초록

This study aims to analyze refusal speech acts and suggest explicit lessons that can be learned. A refusal speech act is a negative response to a suggestion, request, invitation, or advice, and hence, it carries a higher risk of hurting someone’s feelings and injuring their perceived level of prestige. To minimize these risks and maintain smooth social relationships, second language learners should learn various acceptable refusal strategies. Consequently, in order to facilitate this, this study analyzes the Disney animation, Cars 2, for examples of refusal strategies in a specific context. This study focuses on indirect refusal strategies: expressing positive feelings and proposing reasons, questioning, changing topic, and persuading. It also suggests an explicit learning and teaching of indirect refusal strategies in a second language classroom to increase awareness. Discourse completion test, open-ended questionnaire, and the test of refusal expression and strategies are conducted. The results show that an explicit explanation and emphasis on indirect refusal strategies have a positive effect on the awareness of refusal speech acts in second language classroom. The awareness of refusal strategies can lead to an understanding of polite language and can eventually be helpful in enhancing pragmatic competence.
