국문 초록

남한에서 민주화 운동이 정점에 달해있던 당시 북과 꽹과리 소리는 항의 시위현장 도처에서 울려 퍼졌다. 때로 학생들은 풍물의 타악기를 시위의 현장에서 연주하였고 이는 1980년대의 민중정신의 재연이라는 상징적인 의미를 지니고 있었다. 1970~80년대 학생들이나 노동운동 그룹사이에서 연주되던 탈춤이나 저항 민중 노동가요에 비해 정치적 저항으로 연주된 풍물의 의미는 근현대사 민주화 운동사 연구에서 간과되어 왔다. 텍스트가 있는 노래나 저항극은 전복적이고 명백한 반 정부적 정치적 주장을 분명히 전달하기 용이하나, 풍물과 같이 음악이나 춤과 같이 텍스트가 적은 장르도 정치적인 의미를 전달할 수 있다. 특히 풍물연주의 이러한 애매함은 때로 아주 강력한 도구가 될 수도 있다. 이 논문은 한국에서 1980년 중반부터 후반까지 있었던 정치저항 기간 동안 연주되었던 풍물의 역할의 분석을 통해 포착하기 어려운 지점을 고찰한다. 아카이브 사료와 다양한 역사적 비디오 자료, 또한 최근 공개된 버클리대학의 마거릿 딜링 콜렉션의 자료를 중심으로 하여 어떠한 방식으로 풍물의 타악소리가 정치적인 의미를 내포하는지를 고찰한다. 이 논문은 풍물의 다중적인 의미가 상이함을 주장하는 이상적인 표현의 형태로 표출되었음을 주장한다. 이 연구는 한국 민주운동 연구사에 새로운 연구, 즉 정치적 저항에서 음악의 중대한 역할을 제시한다.

영문 초록

During the height of the democratization movement in South Korea, the sounds of drums and gongs were ubiquitous at scenes of protest. Often armed by university students, instruments drawn from the percussion based form known as pungmul were played at demonstrations and also served as a symbolic means of enacting the minjung ethos of the 1980s. Yet unlike the masked dance dramas and protest songs performed by student and labor resistance groups in the 1970s and 1980s, the performance of pungmul at political protests has largely been overlooked in the scholarship on the democratization movement of modern Korean history. While the use of text in performances of song and resistance theater dramas can illuminate subversive or explicit political stances and critiques against the government, text less performances of music and dance genres, such as pungmul, can take on political meaning as well. Indeed, the greater degree of ambiguity in the performance of pungmul became one of its greatest assets and expressive tools. In my paper, I explore this elusive area of inquiry through an analysis of the role that pungmul played in political protests held during the mid to late 1980s in South Korea. Based on the careful study of archival documents, historic audiovisual footage, and recently viewed items in the Margaret Walker Dilling Collection at the University of California at Berkeley, this paper examines how political meaning was aligned with the percussive sounds of pungmul in a number of ways. I argue that it was precisely the multiple meanings ascribed to pungmul that made it an ideal expressive mode to articulate dissent. This research reflects an attempt to introduce another dimension into the scholarship on the South Korean democratization movement; namely, the significant role that music played in political protests.
