국문 초록

음악아카이브는 음악학을 위한 기초자료가 되는 시청각자료 및 이와 관련된 물질자료를 보존·이용하기 위해 보관하는 기구이다. 서양에서는 민족음악학의 발전과 더불어 현지에서 수집한 각종 녹음자료와 기록자료를 보존하고 관리할 필요성이 제기되면서 음악아카이브의 역사도 시작되었다. 현재 세계 각국에서는 급격한 도시화와 세계화의 와중에 사라져가는 자국의 음악유산을 보존하기 위하여 음악아카이브가 급속도로 팽창하는 실정이다. 무형문화유산은 살아있는 생명체이고, 이를 둘러싼 유기적인 환경이 바뀌면 무형문화유산은 외부환경의 영향으로 스스로 소멸되기도 하고 새로운 환경에 적응하기 위하여 끊임없이 변모하기 마련이다. 무형문화유산은 이런 특성으로 말미암아 각종 시청각매체를 활용하여 기록으로 보존해야 하고, 이 기록자료는 체계적·과학적인 방법으로 반영구적으로 보존되어 후세에 물려줘야 할 것이다. 이런 맥락에서 음악아카이브의 역할은 매우 중요하다. 음악아카이브가 왜(소멸·변화의 위기를 극복하기 위해) 필요하며 무엇을(음악을 비롯한 공연예술 유산의 기록자료) 담아야 할 것인가에 대한 논의보다도 앞으로는 어떻게 효율적으로 아카이브에 담고 관리할 것인가에 대한 논의가 중요하다. 무형문화유산을 보존하고 전승하는 것은 매우 복잡하고 어려운 일이다. 음악아카이브는 장기적인 관점에서 운영되어야 하고, 이는 단순히 실제적 보관과 관련된 것뿐만 아니라 윤리적 이슈도 동반한다. 음악아카이브의 각종 자료가 무차별적으로 이용자에게 노출되어 있는 현실에서 전통문화의 불법적 이용으로 이어지기도 한다. 그렇기에 음악아카이브는 수장되는 자료의 모든 저작권과 윤리적 요구도 보장해야 한다. 이것이 무형문화유산과 관련된 가장 중요한 아카이브의 역할일 수도 있다.

영문 초록

An audiovisual archive is a place where audiovisual recordings and other related materials are stored for the purpose of both preservation and use. Since the late 19th century, field researchers, including ethnomusicologists and ethnologists, have accumulated a wealth of recordings on which is based our present knowledge of musical cultures around the world. Early ethnomusicologists were concerned that many musical and performing traditions were becoming extinct and regarded recording collections as the sole manifestations of such material. The intangible cultural heritage exist in a state of flux, and oral traditions and performing arts are constantly changing. Thus audiovisual archives came into being to provide repositories for the systematic storage of field recordings which should be transmitted to the next generation. It is not necessary to ask why (to safeguard the endangered heritage) an archive is needed and what (audiovisual recordings of performing arts) will be stored in an audiovisual archive anymore. We need to contemplate how we can manage a well-established archive at this moment. It is a very complicated task for an archive to preserve and present intangible cultural heritage. Archivists usually have to make decisions archivists are in a position to make decisions that have very long-term effects: not only are physical preservation criteria involved, but also many ethical issues. When we wish to place our digitized materials online as a website presentation, we must determine the intellectual property rights of the recording. The copyright law prohibits placing our materials on a website without the permission of the rights-holders of collections. Therefore, the archivist must ensure that copyright and ethical demands are met by all concerned. Archivists should seek legal opinions not to violate the conditions for use of collections. We should protect traditional culture against exploitation, piracy, and other improper uses. This is one of the most important issues of archives in intangible cultural heritage.
