국문 초록

임진왜란 관련 논저는 국내 학계가 압도적으로 많지만, 한 학자가 전쟁전체를 종합적으로 고찰한 학술저서는 한 손가락으로 꼽을 정도이다. 이는 그동안 국내 학계에서 임진왜란 연구가 활발했음에도, 전쟁을 구성하는 일부 소주제로 저서를 집필하거나 여러 학자들의 논문을 모아 저서로 편집하는 경향이 지배적이었음을 의미한다. 이에 비해, 영어권에서는 금세기에만도 임진왜란을 집중적으로 다룬 개인 사가의 저서가 세 권이나 출판되었다. 그런데 흥미롭게도, 이 세 저서의 저자인 턴불(Stephen Turnbull), 헐리(Samuel Hawley), 스와프(Kenneth Swope)는 연구의 출발지점과 기반을 각각 일본, 한국, 중국에 두었다. 따라서 이 세 저서를 함께 비교･분석하면, 영어권 역사가들이 임진왜란을 보는 시각을 다양하고도 종합적으로 살필 수 있다.

영문 초록

The Hideyoshi invasion of Korea, also known as the Imjin War, from 1592 to 1598 became an historical event that closed the first-half of the Chosŏn dynasty (1392-1910) not just because the war broke out at the mid-point of the five-hundred year dynasty, but also because it caused tremendous damage. The seven-year war had devastating socioeconomic effects. The Japanese occupied the Chosŏn capital for about one year and overran some major cities during the early phase of the war. A number of important materials indispensable to maintain social order and govern the state were burned or lost including household, slave, and land registers. As a result, the war pushed the dynasty to move on to a period of reorganization and reconstruction. It also contributed to the reshaping of the international topography of East Asia, even though Hideyoshi’s challenge to the Ming order, or the ‘Chinese world order,’ ended without any result. Reviewing three monographs on the Imjin War, written in English by Stephen Turnbull (2002), Samuel Hawley (2005), and Kenneth Swope (2009) respectively, this review article examines their different views of the war.
