공양왕대 윤이·이초 사건

국문 초록

1390년 공양왕 2년 5월 발생한 윤이·이초 사건은 매우 독특한 사건이다. 명나라에 다녀온 사신이 왕에게 보고한 것에서부터 사건이 시작되었다. 보고 내용도 외교 문서 등 공문서에 의한 것이 아니었다. 황제의 말을 전한 예부의 말을 사신이 듣고 와서 전한 내용일 뿐이었다. 그러나 그 결과는 고려 정계에 매우 큰 폭풍을 일으켰다. 이성계 세력에 의하여 김저 사건의 주모자로 공격당하였던 이색, 우현보등의 인물들이 계속 공격 대상이 되었다. 그때 공격 대상은 주로 사대부들이었다. 그러나 윤이·이초 사건 관련하여 이성계 세력이 숙청한 인물들은 武將이 많았다. 제대로 된 심문 절차도 없이 관련자들이 죽거나 유배당하였다. 사건의 진실성에 의문을 제기한 여론이 많아 이 사건은 가라앉는 것처럼 보였다. 그러나 그해 11월 이성계 세력에 의하여 사건은 또 다른 사건으로 확대되었다. 그것을 김종연 사건이라고 부를 수 있다. 이 사건 관련자들 역시 뚜렷한 물증 없이 한 개인의 진술로 범죄자가 되었다. 그 대상자는 당대 최고 관직인 시중의 지위에 있던 심덕부를 포함, 공양왕을 즉위시키는 데 공을 세워 공신이 된 지용기, 박위 등도 포함되었다. 이들 역시 무장으로 구분될 수 있는 인물들이었다. 그들 보다 더 많은 수의 하위급 무장들도 연루자가 되어 희생당하였다. 윤이·이초 사건과 김종연 사건으로 이어진 사건은 크게 보면 윤이·이초사건이라고 할 수 있다. 그리고 그 사건 역시 이전 해에 일어났던 김저 사건과 마찬가지로 내용의 진위가 의심되는 사건이었다. 곧 윤이·이초 사건의 본질은 이성계 세력이 보다 확고한 권력 장악을 위해 조작한 사건이라고 생각되는 것이다.

영문 초록

‘The Incident of Yun I(尹彛) and Yi Cho(李初)’, which took place on May of 1390, the second year of the reign of King Gongyang, is a very peculiar incident. Everything started from the Envoy(使臣), who came back from the Ming Dynasty, made his report to the King. His report was not made officially, such as by a diplomatic document. He had just conveyed what the Yebu(禮部), who had delivered the Emperor Ming’s words, had said. But this incident made a huge influence on the politics of the Goryeo Dynasty. Yi Saek and U Hyeon-bo, who were blamed for being the prime movers of ‘The Incident of Kim Jeo’ by the Yi Seong-gye’s party, were once again the victims. At the time of The Incident of Kim Jeo, the targets of attack were usually the Confucian literati. But this time, the people that the Yi Seong-gye’s party had purged related to The Incident of Yun I and Yi Cho were the Military officials. People were killed or sent into exile without even proper interrogation process. It seemed as if this affair would pass by because there were so many who doubted the veracity of it. However on November of the same year, the incident expanded into another realm by the Yi Seong-gye’s party. It may be named as ‘The Incident of Kim Jong-yeon’. Again the related people of the incident were treated as criminals without specific evidence, but just a statement made by an individual. This time, in the list of targeted people, there were names such as the Chief Minister Sim Deok-bu, the highest in office of that time, and Ji Yong-gi and Bak Wi, who became the vassals of merit by making a contribution to King Gongyang ascending the throne. They were people who could also be classified as Military officials. Of course not only them but also many more low-ranking Military officials were sacrificed, being accused of having a relation with the incident. The Incident of Yun I and Yi Cho and The Incident of Kim Jong-yeon may be broadly called The Incident of Yun I and Yi Cho. The veracity of The Incident of Yun I and Yi Cho is very much doubted, alike The Incident of Kim Jeo. This implies that the Yi Seong-gye’s party’s fabrication in order to seize power is the essence of the incident.
