국문 초록

This study is on the 15th century Italian silk textile designs seen through the contemporary western paintings. In the 15th century Renaissance paintings, nature was carefully studied and drawn realistically and the result was precise depiction of textiles for costumes and interiors based on perspective. The research contents and methods are as follows: the Italian silk textile industry in the 15th century was researched and the characteristics of silk textile design in contemporary italian paintings were studied and analyzed. This study was based on the foreign, domestic, and translated literatures along with web sites. As for the images taken for the research, the first criteria was to find Italian paintings that have clear depiction of textile patterns. In order to research the chronological sequence in textile design development, the dates of paintings were in consideration. It was Lucca where the silk industry was first developed in Italian peninsula, and then it had spreaded to Venice, Florence, and Genoa. Italian silk industry developed various silk techniques along with innovative velvet techniques. The characteristics of the silk textile design shown in the 15th century western paintings are as follows; it was silk velvet that the Italian silk masters focused on making and the highly technical cut and uncut velvet having different pile heights were devised in order to impart various textures and depth on the surface of the fabric. A pomegranate as an idealistic motif for velvet was devised and developed into various patterns. As for color combinations, either monochrome or bi-color combinations were used. Gold was the most prominent color and gold velvet was the most sought after textile. Gold as background, indigo, red, terracotta and greens were used on the foreground. As for layouts, before the 1425s, set and all-over were favored; and after that, symmetrical, all-over and set layouts were much used. Italian silk textile masters put all their efforts into creating various qualities of silk textiles and the most innovative patterns rather than distinguishing apparels from home furnishings. Since, they knew how to converge artistic sense into scientific technology, they were able to accomplish remarkable feat and it explains why the modern European textile industry is so innovative and creative.

영문 초록

본 연구는 15세기 이탈리아 실크 텍스타일디자인의 특징을 동시대 회화 속에서 고찰하고자 한다. 15세기의 르네상스 회화는 사물관찰을 통한 사실적인 묘사에 능하여 인물과 의상 및 실내배경의 세밀한 묘사를 원근법에 의거하여 표현하였으므로 텍스타일 패턴을 잘 파악할 수 있다는 점을 주목하였다. 본 연구 내용으로는 15세기 이탈리아 실크산업의 발달과정을 고찰하고, 동시대 유럽의 회화 속에 나타난 텍스타일디자인을 연구하여 그 특징을 분석하였다. 방법으로는 국내외 문헌과 해외저서 번역본, 그리고 인터넷 조사에 근거하였다. 도판 이미지로는 15세기 이탈리아 회화속 텍스타일 패턴이 선명하게 표현되어 디자인 특징을 분별할 수 있는 그림 위주로 선정하였으며, 시대별로 디자인의 변화를 파악하기 위해 회화 제작시기의 편중됨이 없도록 고려하였다. 15세기 이탈리아 실크직물은 루카를 위시하여 베네치아, 피렌체, 제노아 등지에서 발달되었고, 다양한 실크벨벳 제직기술이 고안되었다. 15세기의 서양화를 통해 연구된 텍스타일디자인의 특징은 다음과 같다. 15세기의 이탈리아 실크텍스타일은 벨벳의 한 종류에 치중되었으며, 벨벳의 표면에 다양한 층을 주어 ‘컷 앤 언컷(Cut and Uncut)’의 질감과 공간감을 위한 다양한 조직이 개발되었다. 모티프로는 벨벳에 가장 이상적인 석류형태가 개발, 발전 및 변형되었다. 색상으로는 단색상이나 금을 배경으로 한 두색상 배합이 주로 사용되었다. 금색이 가장 선호된 색상이었고, 금 벨벳이 가장 선호된 직물이었으며 금색과 같이 사용된 배색으로는 진남색, 홍색, 적갈색 그리고 녹색등이다. 레이아웃으로는 1425년 이전에는 세트, 전면 레이아웃이, 그 이후에는 대칭, 전면, 세트레이아웃이 주로 사용되었다. 이탈리아 장인들은 의상과 퍼니싱용의 용도별 구분보다는 직물자체 의 종류와 패턴개발에 중점을 두었다. 이 시대의 이탈리아 직물은 기술과 예술의 융합의 결과이며, 현재 유럽에서 고도로 발달된 혁신적 직물을 생산할 수 있는 것은 당시에 이룩하였던 성과가 전해 내려오기 때문이다.
