민생위기 시대에 되새기는 율곡 이이의 생민정치

국문 초록

이 글은 율곡 탄생 480주년을 맞이한 오늘, 그러나 ‘역 사는 진보한다’는 명제가 무색하리만치 그가 몸담았던 시 절과 별반 다르지 않게 사회의 모순과 적폐가 우리네 숨 통을 옥죄는 이 때, 율곡의 ‘생민(生民)’ 정치를 되짚어보 기 위해 기획되었다. 이를 위해 먼저 ‘실천적 지식인’ 율곡에게 학문의 의미 를 재검토하는 것으로 글을 시작한다. 그는 ‘위기지학’(爲 己之學)이 지배적이던 풍토에서 ‘위인지학’(爲人之學)을 추 구했다. 그에게 공부란 어디까지나 인간세상을 두루 이롭 게 하기 위함이지, 자기만족적 관념의 유희가 아니었다. 그는 ‘구도장원공’(九度壯元公)으로 불릴 만큼 천재적인 인물이었다. 그의 천재성은 어머니 신사임당을 닮았다. 그 러나 그에게 신사임당은 자신의 어머니이기 이전에 학자 이자 화가로서 독립적인 인격체였다. 이러한 관점은 당대 의 시대적 한계를 뛰어넘는 것으로, 정치가로서 그가 백 성을 바라보는 관점과도 상통한다. 그에게 백성은 세도가들에 의해 마구 수탈당하는 ‘소나 양’같은 존재였다. 힘없는 백성을 먹이고 살리는 정치를 펴기 위해 조선사회가 뿌리째 개혁되지 않으면 안 된다는 것이 그의 부단한 외침이었다. 그의 ‘생민’ 정치는 약자의 죽임이 일상화된 오늘 우리 사회에 큰 울림으로 다가온다.

영문 초록

This article is designed to review Yulgok Yi Yi s Saengmin (Feeding and Nurturing the People) politics, which is significant for this year when is the 480 anniversary of Yulgok s birth, not to mention there is practically no difference between his age and our time in terms of the socio-political crisis. This article begins to rethink the meaning of the Learning for Yulgok. He pursued Wiinjihak (Learning for the others and the world) among the intellectual atmosphere when Wigijihak (Learning for the self-discipline) prevailed. To him, Learning was not an ideological argument nor a self-satisfied amusement but the beneficial instrument for human world. He was a genius, the people called him Gudojangwongong (sweeping over the whole national examination), taking after his mother Sinsaimdang. However, he respected his mother as an independent scholar and artist, aside from her motherhood or wifehood. In that sense, he was far from his time, and it is no doubt that his exceptional view naturally affected on his attitude as a politician towards the people. To him, min (the people) were like cows and lambs who were exploited by the powerful elites. He endlessly claimed the Chosun society was in danger of collapse unless far-reaching reform was implemented. His passion for Saengmin (feeding and nurturing the people) politics will be the torch of hope for our society where we experiences the generalization of massacre of the weak and powerless.
