노래로 불려 진 천주가사의 음악적 특징

국문 초록

천주가사는 천주라는 서학사상의 핵심어와 전통적 문학 장르인 가사라는 말이 융합된 합성어이다. 교우들의 신심과 교리실천을 강조하기 위한 목적으로 탄생되어, 천주교의 포교를 위해 활용되었다. 선현들은 조선시대의 사회상과 천주교의 교리를 위반하지 않는 범위에서 가장 최상의 방법인 노래문화를 형성하였고, 우리의 민족성을 토대로 변화 발전시켜나갔다. 본고에서 살펴 본 천주가사는 1886년을 경계로 제1기와 제2기로 구분한 23종 40곡이다. 제1기에 속하는 곡은 <천당노래>, <천주공경가>, <삼세대의>, <사향가> 4종이며, 제작 시기를 알 수 없는 <주일가>, <복자현양가>, <이별가>, <자탄가>, <진복팔단> 등을 합친 19종은 제2기에서 살펴보았다. 음악적인 특징은 정악이 22곡, 민요가 8곡, 시편성가가 6곡, 창가가 4곡으로 나타난다. 이러한 특징은 구성음, 리듬, 선율진행, 종지음 등이 서로 혼재하지만, 정악에 기반을 두고 있다. 이는 개인에 의해 창작된 천주가사가 교리실천을 위하여 다수에게 불려 지거나 교우들의 신심에 기반을 두었기 때문으로 보인다. 제작시기나 제작자, 채집지역에 따라 음악의 특징이 구별되지 않고, 가창자에 따라 차별화를 이룬다. 즉, 1930년대 박제원의 작품으로 알려진 <통회사>, <사말추론가>, <소경자탄가>의 3종에서는 박엄정에 의한 <통회사>, <사말추론가2>와 서선이에 의한 <사말추론가1>, <소경자탄가>가 구별되는 것이다. 한 가창자에 의한 노래는 거의 동일한 특징이 나타나는데, 서선이는 <사말추론가1>, <소경자탄가>, <십계타령(서)>에서 모두 정악의 음조직을 보이고, 박엄정은 <문답권학가>, <통회사>, <사말추론가2>에서 모두 시편성가의 특징을 보인다. 천주가사는 가창자의 선호도에 의해 전통적인 요소와 외래 음악적인 요소가 취사선택되고 개개인의 음악성에 따라 구별되고 있다. 이는 한국의 전통과 서양의 종교가 융합되는 과정에서 생산된 천주가사만의 고유성으로 볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

Catholic verse is a compound word of Catholic (Lord of Heaven), a core term of Western Learning and verse, a traditional literary genre. It is introduced to stress faith and creed practice of the believer and also used for propagandizing the Catholic Church. Our ancestors formed a song culture which is the best method reflecting the social feature of Joseon to the extent in not breaching the decree of the Catholic Church and developed based on our nationality. This study examined and sorted 40 verses in 23 kinds of Catholic Verse in two stages before and after 1886. The verses in the stage 1 is 4 including Cheondangnorae, Cheonjugonggyeongga, Samsedaeui, Sahyangga and The composition time of Juilga, Bokjahyeonyangga, Ibyeolga, Jatanga and Jinbokpaldan is unknown and the other 19 belongs to the stage 2. As for musical characteristics, 22 kinds of Jeongak, 8 kinds of folk song, 6 of psalm and 4 of Changa. While the tone, rhythm, melody and Jongjieum exist in mixed form, they are based on Jeongak. This seems because those songs composed by individuals are based on the faith of the believers or widely sung by many for the practice of dogma. However, the musical feature is not identified by composition time or collection area but by those who sang songs. It means that while there is no similarity shown in Tonghoisa, Samalchuronga, Sogyeongjatanga and which had identical composition period and composers, songs from one singer have almost similar features. Songs by a singer had almost a similar feature. For example, Seo Seon Yi had all Jeongak music structure in her Samalchuronga1, Sogyeongjatanga, and Sipgaetaryeong. On the other hand, Park Eom Jeong had all features of psalm songs at Munhakgeonhakga, Tonghoisa and Samalchuronga 2. As such Catholic verse demonstrates uniqueness by adopting partly traditional feature and foreign musical feature according to preference of singers.
