This paper aims to explain the distinction of corporeal representation in Masumura Yasuzo’s movies, especially focusing on “IREZUMI(Tattoo)” that was filmed in 1966. The contemporary Japanese movies of the 1960s shared “the sensibility of rebellion and resistance” in common, regardless of their political stances, and also began to exhibit the body of the actress on the screen. That is to say, the postwar movies tried to describe values such as freedom, liberation, and resistance through the female body. This naked woman’s body,
representing the deviation from old moral standards, obedience and patience,
practiced political esthetics of ‘rebelliousness’ in the boom of erotic movies
particularly in the mid to late 1960s. However, it also would be problematic
that visualization of woman’s body which connotes political meaning is not
related to subjectification of women as the main agents of political practice.
Still, the woman’s body seduced and provoked the male subject only to call
him the main agent of political practice or passionate actor, and eventually
gave all authority of resistive power to him. Therefore, the woman’s body was
imaged to express or evoke liberation and freedom of men.
Masumura is not an exception. “IREZUMI” also has the viewpoint of otherization
as it exhibited woman’s body as an object. In addition, its Carmen-like
character makes the woman seemingly hysterical. However, the film's image
reflects Masmura’s own political esthetics, disturbing unconscious acceptance and consumption toward fixed womanhood. It is different from others because
the image threatens the eyes of prejudice against women and leads
them to destruction. Here, the key of the movie is Zorogumo tattoo(meaning
Spider Woman), on the heroine’s back, which disallows erotic pleasure of peeking
to the audiences, and resists to the otherization(signification).
Unlike other contemporary movies of the 1960s, Masumura’s movie tried to
realize passionate and instinctive woman-image, not violent and enthusiastic
man-image. He thought woman has reduced or limited her individualities for
the ideal, ambition, and ideology of country, community, men. In movie,
woman represent individuality of body, and man represent totality of social
conception. So, the movie “IREZUMI(Tattoo)” show that genuine resistance is
generated only from accidental power of body, not from the ideological
ground. Though this passionate woman-image reveals its own limit insofar as
it follows the old accomplished scheme, ‘man=rational, cultural being, woman=
instinctive, natural being’, nevertheless, it shows Masmura’s own political
aesthetic, which cannot be defined as a ‘1960s sensibility’.
