국문 초록

본고는 1990년대 이후 일본 경제의 위상저하를 상징적으로 나타내고 있는 일본전자 산업의 국제경쟁력 하락의 현황을살펴보고 그 원인을 분석하는 것이다. 일본 전자산업은1980년대까지 자동차 산업과함께 일본의 높은 산업 경쟁력을 대표하였으나, 2000년대 이후 급속히 경쟁력을 하락시키고 있다. 그 원인으로는 생산성 저하, 일본적 경영의 한계를 들 수 있으나, 가장 근본적 요인은 산업의 모듈화에 따른 대처에 실패했기 때문이다. 일본의 제조업은 전통적으로 인티그럴형 제품에 강점을 가지고 있었고, 전자제품도 인티그럴형 제품이었다. 그런데 1990년대 이후 주요 전자제품의 아키텍처가모듈러형으로변화한 것이다. 즉 일본기업 시스템의 장점이 발현되기 어렵게 산업환경이 변화했다는 점에 경쟁력 약화의 가장 큰 원인 이 있다. 이것은 1970년대 초에 메커트로닉스, ME화에 의해 일본 가전산업의 국제경쟁력이 급속하게 향상될 수 있었던 것과는 정반대로 모듈화가 작용했다는것을 의미한다.

영문 초록

Until the 1980s, both the electronics industry and the automotive industry in Japan have demonstrated strong international competitiveness. However, after the 1990s, while the automotive industry maintained strong competitiveness, the electronics industry’s competitiveness rapidly weakened. The purpose of this article is to explain why the competitiveness of the Japanese electronics industry weakened. The lower productivity and the limit of ‘Japanese style management’ are mentioned as factors of the weakening of the competitiveness of the electronics industry. However, the most critical factor is the modularity of the electronics industry. Traditionally, Japanese manufacturers had the advantage of integral-type products; electronic products until the 1980s were those types of products. But this changed in the 1990s, with electronic products such as thin panel TVs, which belonged to the category of modular products. The competitiveness of the Japanese electronics industry rapidly improved because of the mechatronics and micro-electronics of the early 1970s. Contrary to that, modularity weakened the competitiveness of the Japanese electronics industry.
