한국인 대학생들의 학습유형 선호도와 영어 글쓰기 수행 간의 연관성 탐색

국문 초록

본 연구는 학습유형 선호도에 따라 제 2언어 글쓰기 과정 및 결과물에서 학습자간 차이가 나타나는지를 탐색하였다. 자료 수집은 영어를 제 2언어로 학습하는 20명의 한국인 대학생들을 대상으로 이루어졌다. 참여자들의 학습유형 선호도를 측정하는 도구로 허니와 뭄포드의 학습유형 질문지가 사용되었다. 먼저 참여자들이 글쓰기 정에서 수행한 생각말하기 자료 및 자신의 글쓰기 과정을 회상하여 기록한 저널을 석함으로써 학습유형 선호도와 영어 글쓰기 과정 및 전략 사용 간에 연관성이 있는지 살펴보았다. 또한 영어 에세이의 언어지표로서 정확성, 유창성, 복잡성 및 질적점수(분석적 채점 점수 및 총체적 채점 점수)를 분석함으로써 학습유형 선호도와 글쓰기 결과물 간에 연관성이 있는지 고찰하였다. 연구결과, Theorist 유형에 강한 선호 를 보일수록 개요 작성을 중시하고 아이디어 탐색 및 수정작업에 인색한 반면, Activist 및 Reflector 유형에 대한 선호가 강할수록 개요를 간략하게 작성하는 대신이후의 아이디어 탐색 및 수정작업을 활발하게 하는 경향을 보였다. 한편 영어 에세이의 언어지표 및 질적 수준에서는 학습유형 선호도에 따른 차이가 뚜렷하게 나타나지 않았다.

영문 초록

This study explores whether Korean English learners show differences in their writing performance depending upon their learning style preferences. The data obtained from 20 Korean college students were used for the study. Honey and Mumford’s “Learning Styles Questionnaire” was employed to determine participants’ learning style preferences. To inspect whether learning style preferences were related with writing processes and strategies use, we first analyzed participants’ think-aloud protocols while completing an English essay and their retrospective reports about their own writing processes. To probe whether learning style preferences were related with writing outcomes, we further examined participants’ English essays in terms of overall quality scores as well as fluency, complexity, and accuracy indices. The results of the study indicated that learners with a stronger preference to Theorist style tended to make a through outline in planning stage and use fewer strategies of idea search and revising. On the other hand, learners with a stronger preference to Activist tended to make only a minimal outline and utilize the revising strategy more frequently. However, no sufficient evidence was found to suggest that learning style preferences were associated with writing outcome measures beyond the influence of English proficiency. The implications and limitations of the study are provided.
