영문 초록

This essay presents a self-critical review of the disciplinary character of regional development studies which we currently practice. In so doing, it legitimizes the rise of a new school of regional development studies. "The intellectual guide for this task is borrowed from the neo-Marxist political economy perspective which shapes the major direction of urban and regional studies in the western European society. Lessons from the so-called regional poiitical economy as a fusion of neo-Marxist political economy and regional studies are enormous and rich. Among others, its meta-theorietical methodology is most instructive for setting the new theoretical orientation of regional development studies. Large part of the paper is devoted to qualifying the new school of regional development studies whose theoretical and methodological equipment is adopted largely from regional political economy. The new school yet to be established is called the `Third` school, following the `First` school specializing in civil-engineering expertise and the `Second` school in regional-science knowledge.
