교리교육에 관한 공식적 “교회 정신” :

국문 초록

본고는 포스트 모던 사회와 문화 속에서 「교리교육 총지침」(1998)이 제시하는 전망을 살펴봄으로써 교리교육(종교교육 및 교리)에 대한 ‘교회의 정신’을 제시하고자 한다. 사실 초대 교회 때부터 1500년대까지는 사회문화적 여건이 종교적 가치를 포용하였기에 교리교육도 더욱 원활하게 이루어질 수 있었다. 때문에 신자들 역시 공식적인 교리문답 없이도 전례와 공동체 생활을 통해 신앙을 길러 나갈수 있었다. 하지만 트리엔트 공의회(1545~1563)를 거치면서 단순 암기식의 주입식 교리가 등장하게 되었고, 이로써 교회 안에는 이러한 방법론을 떠나 실제 생활과 체험에 입각한 참여적 교육을 장려하는 대항운동이 등장하게 되었다. 따라서 ‘뮌헨방법론’과 제2차 바티칸공의회에서 제시된 전망은 모두 이러한 현대적 동향의 일환이라 할 수 있겠다. 즉, 신자들에게 보다 능동적이고 역동적인 형태의 교육을 제공하고자 하는 시도였던 것이다. 세상이 ‘배타적 인본주의’에 더욱 깊게 뿌리내리게 되면서 공의회 이후, 이러한 패러다임의 필요성은 더욱 절박해졌다. 배타적 인본주의는 종교적 가치관을 배척하여 교리교육을 어렵게 하는 사회문화적 분위기 형성하기 때문이다. 「교리교육 총지침」은 이러한 포스트 모던 시대에 교회가 교리교육 직무와 복음화에 대해 어떠한 ‘정신’을 제시하는지를 보여 주고 있다. 이를 위해 문헌은 몇 가지 근본 지침을 통해 교회가 이해하는 교리교육의 본질과 목적을 밝히고, 교리내용과 교육방법론이 어떠해야 하고 교육의 대상은 누구여야 하는지를 설명한다. 이 모든 것을 볼 때 우리는 오늘날 교회가 신자들로 하여금 그들의 긴 삶의 여정에서 그리스도의 제자로서 교리 지식을 배우고(inform), 그렇게 양성되고(form), 결국 변화하도록(transform)하는 전인적 교육을 지향한다는 것을 알 수 있다. 따라서 교리교육은 지성과 정서와 행동의 차원을 모두 포괄함으로써 사람들의 생활과 그리스도교 신앙을 하나의 살아 있는 신앙 안에 통합시켜야 한다. 간단히 말해 교회는 전인적 신앙으로 나아가기 위한 통합 교육을 추구하고 있다는 것이다. 본고는 이러한 원리를 실천으로 옮길 수 있는 열 가지 원칙을 제시하고 있다. 이로써 ‘교회의 정신’이 오늘날의 어두움을 밝히는 빛이 될 수 있기를 소망해본다.

영문 초록

This essay aims to present the “mind of the Church” concerning catechetical education (religious education AND catechesis), looking at the horizons offered by the General Directory for Catechesis (1998) as a response to the post-modern society and culture. From the days of the early Church up until the 1500s, catechetical education was facilitated by the socio-cultural background that embraced religious values. People were able to grow in faith through liturgy and community life, without the need for a formal catechism. But a question-and-answer form of catechesis began to emerge with the Council of Trent (1545-1563), which incited a counter-movement that sought to depart from such method and promote a more participative pedagogy grounded in real-life experience. The “Munich Method” and the vision of Vatican II are examples of this contemporary shift, which look to engage the faithful in a more active and dynamic form of education. The need for such paradigm has increased since the Council, as we are living in a world deeply rooted in “exclusive humanism”; this discourages religious values and forms socio-cultural conditions that pose immense challenges for catechesis. The General Directory for Catechesis is a witness to the Church’s “mind” regarding catechetical ministry and evangelization in this post-modern society. The guiding principles laid out in the document reveal the Church’s position on the nature and purpose of catechesis, as well as the content, pedagogy, and participants of catechetical education. These testify that the Church envisions a holistic education that informs, forms, and transforms the faithful on their life-long journey as disciples of Jesus Christ. This means that catechesis must encompass the cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions to integrate the people’s lives and Christian faith into a living faith. In short, the Church is calling for an integral formation toward holistic faith. The paper will follow by proposing ten principles that may help put these principles into practice, so that the “mind of the Church” may come to see light to illumine the darkness of this day.
