미국 가톨리시즘의 위기 :

미국 가톨리시즘의 사회학적 상황은 모순으로 가득 차 있다. 가톨리시즘은 한편으로는 미국 문화의 변방으로부터 미국 주류의 일부로 옮겨갔다. 한때 의심스러운 외부자였던 로마 가톨리시즘은 현재 핵심적인 내부자이며, 신자 수와 정치적 영향력으로도 모든 개신교 교파들을 훨씬 뛰어넘는다. 반면에 미국 가톨리시즘은 제2차 바티칸공의회 이후 사제, 수녀, 본당, 학교 등의 감소를 겪고 있다. 사회조사 결과를 보면 산아조절과 동성애를 포함한 성 윤리에 관한 교회의 권위와 가르침에 대한 수용은 현저히 줄어들었다. 그러나 종교적 신조에 관한 핵심적인 교리의 수용은 상당히 안정적임을 보여 준다. 그리고 제2차 바티칸 공의회 이후 등장한 새로운 사도직, 이를테면 종신 부제직과 다양한 평신도 사도직들은 평신도들의 활력을 보여준다. 제2차 바티칸 공의회 이후 미국 주교회의는 활력을 보여 주었는데 단지 미국의 가톨릭 신자들뿐 아니라 모든 미국 시민들에게 민족 중심과 국가 안보에 대한 집중을 넘어 세계 정의와 평화, 특히 세상의 빈자들을 집단의 도덕적 사고의 최전선에 두라고 촉구하였다. 그러나 미국 가톨리시즘의 이러한 활력은 스스로 자초한 성직자의 성추행 추문 위기로 상당히 정체되고 있다. 사회학에서 제도의 활력의 흥망성쇠에 관한 전망은 “카리스마”와 그것의 “일상화”라는 막스 베버의 분석에 크게 의존한다. 이 논문은 결론에서 프란치스코 교황이 현대에 적응을 위한 소명에 대한 요청과 통일된 정체성의 유지에 대한 요청의 지속적인 순환 사이의 변증법을 성취하는 데 있어서 지니고 있을지도 모느는 영향력의 가능성을 제기한다.

영문 초록

The sociological condition of American Catholicism is full of paradox. On the one hand, Catholicism has moved from the periphery of American culture and society to becoming a major part of the American mainstream. Once a suspect outsider, Roman Catholicism is presently a core insider, far outnumbering all Protestant denominations in numbers and in political representation. On the other hand, American Catholicism is undergoing a post-Vatican II Council decline in the number of priests, nuns, parishes, and schools. Surveys show a great decline in Catholic acceptance of Church authority and teachings on sexual morality, including birth control and same sex marriage. Yet acceptance of key church doctrines concerning religious beliefs show considerable stability. And the post Vatican II Council emergence of new ministries such as the permanent diaconate and varied ministries show a genuine vitality amongst the laity. Soon after the Second Vatican Council, the Catholic Conference of American Bishops showed an episcopal vitality by challenging not only American Catholics but all citizens to look beyond their ethnocentrism and fixation with National Security. The Bishops placed the peace and justice of the world, and especially the poor of the world, at the forefront of the collective moral imagination. The self-made crisis of clergy sexual abuse scandal, however, has considerably stalled this vitality. A sociology perspective on the ebbs and flows of institutional vitality leans heavily on Max Weber’s analysis of “charisma” and its “routinization”. The essay concludes with a reflection on the possible impact Pope Francis might have on achieving a contemporary dialectic between the ongoing cycles of the call to adaptive mission and the maintenance of a unifying identity.
