유럽의 가톨릭 교회는 위기에 처해 있다. 전통적인 “가톨릭 환경” 은 사라졌고, 그리스도인으로 사는 것이 더 이상 당연하지 않게 되었다. 긴 그리스도교 역사에도 불구하고 그리스도인들은 다음 세대의 사회에서 다수가 아니라 소수가 될 것이다. 독일 통일 이후 세례자 수는 475,000명에서 165,000명으로 감소했다. 근대화 과정에서 종교는 필연적으로 감소하고 마침내 사리질 것이라는 세속화 이론이 이러한 변화를 설명하곤 한다. 그동안 종교는 노인과 배우지 못한 이들과 근대를 받아들일 수 없는 이들 등, 사회에서 소외된 사람들 사이에서 존속하고 있었다. 최근의 사회학은 이 세속화 이론이 틀렸다는 것을 보여 준다. 근대 사회는 여러 가지 형태가 있으며, 그중 일부는 종교생산적이다. 개인화 이론과 종교다원화 이론이 유럽에서 일어나는 종교적 변화를 보다 적절하게 설명하는 것으로 보인다. 과거에 비난받았던, 신앙에 관한 의심은 오늘날 성숙한 양심의 결정이라고 폭넓게 여겨진다. 신앙인들은 자신들이 유익한 것으로 수용하는 것과 거부하는 것을 구분한다. 신앙은 다원화되었으며 교회와 연결성이 느슨해졌다. 그러므로 현재의 위기는 신앙의 위기가 아니라 교회의 위기다. 유럽의 여러 교회는 다원주의의 도전을 받고 있다. 이 글에서 두가지 가능성이 논의된다. 첫 번째는 핵심적인 그리스도교 메시지에 있어서 일치를 강화하고 신앙인들의 자유 및 비본질적인 문제들에서 폭넓은 다양성을 수용할 가능성이며, 두 번째는 공동체를 위해 협력하는 성직자들과 평신들 직무의 다원성을 발전시킬 가능성이다. 제2차 바티칸 공의회는 이러한 해결책을 찾을 길을 열어 놓았다.

영문 초록

The Catholic Church in Europe is in a crisis. The traditional “catholic milieu” has disappeared, it is no longer natural to be a Christian. In many regions of Europe, despite a long Christian history, Christians will be a minority within the next generation. One example: Since the reunifycation in Germany the number of baptisms have decreased from 475,000 to 165,000. This development was often explained by the theory of secularization, which posits that in the process of modernization, religion necessaryily decreases and in the end will disappear. In the meantime, religion survives on the margins of society: amongst the old, the illiterate and those who are unable to accept the modern world. Modern sociology demonstrates that this concept of secularization is wrong. There are different forms of modernity and some of them are even religious-productive. A better explanation of the religious development in Europe seems to be the theory of individualization and pluralization of religion. What was formerly regarded as a culpable doubt is now widely seen as the decision of a mature conscience. Believers differentiate between what they accept as fruitful and what they reject. Religion has become pluralistic and less church-bound. Thus, the actual crisis is not of religion but of the Church. The Churches in Europe encounter the challenge of pluralism in different ways. In this paper two possibilities are discussed. First: To strengthen the unity in the centre of the Christian message and to accept freedom and a wide variety in all non-essential questions. Second: To develop a plurality of ordained and lay-ministries, which cooperate for the sake of their congregations. Vatican II Council opened the way to these solutions.
