인간 생명이라는 커다란 물음 앞에 교회는 예수 그리스도를 답으로 제시한다. 하느님의 외아들인 그리스도는 몸소 사람이 되어 자신을 진리요 길이요 생명으로 드러내 보였기 때문이다. 그러므로 예수 그리스도를 믿는 이는 누구나 영원한 생명을 누리게 된다. 그리스도는 나아가 교회를 세워 자신의 사명이 영구히 지속되게 하였다. 따라서 교회는 성령의 도움을 받아 기쁜 소식을 선포하여, 사람들이 그리스도를 믿도록 인도해야 한다. 다른 한편으로 교회는 복음 선포를 통해 지상에서 자라나면서도 하나이고 거룩하고 보편되며 사도로부터 이어 오는 교회로서의 신원을 지켜야 하는데, 16세기에는 여러 역사적 이유로 이것이 그 무엇보다 중요한 쟁점이 되었다. 이에 따라 1622년에 교황 그레고리오 15세는 포교성성(현 인류복음화성)을 설립하여 교회의 선교 사명을 우선적으로 강조하고자 했고, 이는 ‘만민 선교’(missio ad gentes)를 지칭하기 위해 ‘복음화’라는 용어를 더욱 많이 쓰는 것으로 이어지기도 했다. 교황 성 요한 바오로 2세에 이르러서는 “새로운 열정과 새로운 방법과 새로운 표현”을 의미하는 ‘새로운 복음화’가 새롭게 제시되어, 복음화를 통해 교회의 쇄신을 이끌고 복음을 전파할 능력을 고양시키는 대 이바지하였다. 한편 아시아라는 맥락에서 이 새로운 복음화는 곧 복음 선포자들의 선교 열정, 특히 사도적 덕목과 문화 연구, 더 나아가 그리스도와의 만남에서 비롯된 희망과 기쁨에 대한 열정을 의미하게 된다.

영문 초록

Human life presents itself as a question to which the Church has the answer from Jesus Christ. As the only begotten Son of the Father, he became man and manifested himself as the Truth, the Way, and the Life. Whoever believes in Jesus Christ will have eternal life. He founded the Church to perpetuate his mission. With the assistance of the Holy Spirit, the Church is to proclaim the Good News, so that people may have faith in Christ. The Church, while expanding, is well aware of the necessity of safeguarding her unity, holiness, catholicity, and apostolicity. For historyical reasons, this became a very compelling issue in the 16th century. In 1622 Pope Gregory XV founded Propaganda Fide so as to give priority to the Mission of the Church. At a later stage, the term Evangelization began to be used more frequently to signify the mission ad gentes. During the Pontificate of St. John Paul II, the term New Evangelization was introduced, i.e., “new in its ardor, new in its methods, and new in its expressions”. Concretely, evangelization becomes a program renewing the Church, enhancing her capacity for the spread of the Gospel. In the Asian context, New Evangelization means the renewal of missionary enthusiasm for the evangelizers, in particular their enthusiasm for Apostolic Virtues, Cultural Studies, Hope, and Joy of meeting Christ.
