중국의 위대한 선교사 마테오 리치(Matteo Ricci, 1552~1610)는 “복음 선포와 해당 지역의 문화와의 대화를 적절하게 조합시켰던 독특한 사례”(교황 베네딕토 16세)로 간주되는데, 이러한 조합은 신앙과 이성의 조합과 밀접한 관계가 있다. 이러한 확신을 비탕으로 리치는 이와 관련된 많은 수의 책들을 저술하였다. 그가 이처럼 복음과 문화의 조합을 성취할 수 있었던 비밀은 우정에 있었다. 사실 그가 처음 중국어로 쓴 책인 『교우론』(1596)은 바로 우정에 관한 저서였다. 이는 그가 그리스도교 신앙과 유교적 이성을 조합하고자 시도한 첫 시도였다. 1601년에 공식 출간된 이 책은 당시 중국의 지식인들 사이에서 베스트셀러가 되었다. 동일한 해에 리치는 『천주실의 - 천상 주님의 진정한 의미』라는 제목으로 널리 알려진 또 다른 작품을 준비하고 있었다. 이를 통해 그는 중국 지식인들과의 보다 체계적인 소통을 위해 많은 노력을 기울였다. 그의 신앙과 과학, 덕행과 우정으로 인해 리치는 현자(서태)로 널리 알려지면서 중국인들의 주목을 받을 수 있었다. 이 논문은 신앙과 이성의 조합에 투영된 리치의 사고를 조명하기 위해 『교우론』의 범문화적 탐독을 제안하고 있다. 이 책은 그의 “북경으로의 상승”(ascent to Peking)에 반하여 읽어야 하는데, 여기에는 지리학적, 언어학적, 사회학적, 도덕적, 그리고 문화적 측면의 다섯 가지 의미가 담겨 있다. 『교우론』의 주요 주제는 우정의 방법과 관련이 있다. 저자는 거기서 한발 더 나아가 이성이 어떻게 우정을 공고히 할 수 있는지에 관해 보편적 동료애, 친밀성-상호성, 그리고 도덕적 상승이라는 세 가지 관점에서 증명해 보이고 있다. 우정 또한 애정-기쁨, 지혜-덕행, 영적 보배, 충의-신뢰, 그리고 초월성에 관한 열린 마음에 있어 신앙의 자양분이 된다.

영문 초록

Matteo Ricci(1552~1610) was a great missionary in China. He is regarded as “a unique case of a felicitous synthesis between the proclamation of the Gospel and the dialogue with the culture”(Pope Benedict XVI). Such a synthesis is closely related to that between faith and reason. Convinced of this, Ricci kept writing books in this regard. The secret that allowed him to achieve this is friendship. In fact, his first book written in Chinese 交友論(Jiaoyou Lun) - De Amicitia(1596) was precisely on friendship. It was his initial attempt to make a synthesis between the Christian faith and Confucian reason. The book, which was officially printed in 1601, soon became a best seller among the Chinese literati. About the same years, Ricci was preparing another well-known volume entitled 天主實義(Tianzhu Shiyi) - The True Meaning of the Lord of Heaven by which he endeavored to engage in dialogue more systematically with the Chinese literati. Because of his faith, science, virtue, and friendship, Ricci managed to make himself known as a sage(西泰, XiTai) and was able to draw the attention of the Chinese people. This article intends to offer an inter-cultural reading of Jiaoyou Lun so as to highlight the insight Ricci gained into a synthesis of faith and reason. The book should be read against his “ascent to Peking”, which contains five layers of meaning: geographical, linguistic, social, ethical, and cultural. The main theme of JYL is concerned with the Way of friendship. The author further puts into evidence how reason strengthens friendship in three aspects: universal fellowship, intimacy-reciprocity, and moral ascent. Friendship, in its turn, nourishes faith in terms of affection-joy, wisdom-virtue, spiritual treasure, loyalty-trust, and openness to transcendence.
