영문 초록

Based on national data set, this study demonstrates that network actions across multiple ties increase insensitivity to illegality of bribery and insensitivity to punishment possibility. Networks based on the ties through ancestral hometown, kinship, and alumni, three major networks in Korea, have been important social milieu and social capital for the general public in Korea. A high proportion of Koreans hold ties or become active in at least one of the three networks, while a substantial proportion of Koreans are not active at all. Multiple actions in the multiple networks provide the tie holder with both bonding type and bridging type of social capital, i.e., access to opportunity, information, and trust. Those who are active in multiple networks can take advantage of the two types of social capital for bribery purpose, and are more likely to be insensitive to illegality of bribery or punishment possibility or both. This study focusing on the negative side of social networks can contribute to research traditions on corruption or bribery as well as social capital from social networks.
