‘頑民不事二君’ 石邨의 한글書藝美 考察

국문 초록

본 연구는 朝鮮末期 當代의 碩學이자 名筆家로 명성이 높았던, 石邨 尹用求(1853년–1939년)의 한글書藝美에 관해 고찰한 것이다. 尹用求는 조선시대 勤皇主義 정치인이며, 亂世와 國亡을 당하여 ‘不事二君’ 정신으로 隱逸志士의 삶을 산 인물이며, 閔泳煥·閔泳翊·李會榮과 함께 帝國四家로 평가 받았다. 石邨은 『朝鮮環輿勝覽』의 序文에서 “조국의 영토와 연혁은 현인군자의 도덕과 명절과 동량이며, 우주의 해와 달과 같이 밝게 빛나니”라는 글로 조국을 사랑하는 본마음을 담았다. 나아가 그는 현실적인 名利에 연연하지 않고 時宜에 따를 줄 아는 時中의 태도와, 義를 중히 여기고 利를 중히 여기지 않는 실천적 士大夫적 삶을 살았다. 石邨은 왕가의 귀족으로서, 조정의 관료로서, 조선의 선비로서, 80권의 巨帙 『뎡긔람』과 10권의 『동긔람』을 諺解하여 궁체로 집필하였다. 따라서 그동안 궁체란 일반적으로 ‘궁녀들에 의해서 쓰여진 書體’라고 정의한 점은 再考되어야 할 것이다. 石邨의 한글서예는 기본적으로 궁체의 틀을 유지하지만, 그의 딸 師候堂 尹伯榮의 『뎡사긔람』권지십구에 비하여 좀 더 草率하며, 『옥원듕회연』권지십팔의 엄정·정형화된 字法에서는 조금은 벗어나, 한글의 장점이자 단점인 簡易함을 易理的 氣韻으로 調和롭게 하였다. 이는 궁체흘림의 교본이라 할 수 있는 『옥원듕회연』권지십팔과 비교하여도 손색없을 정도의 남필 궁체 수준이다. 한문의 필력이 유감없이 발휘된 石邨의 한글서예를 보면 어수선한 듯 보이나 어설프지 않다. 이른바 법도에 구애받지 않고 ‘逸筆草草’로써 풀어놓은 草率한 逸氣는 超逸美로서 표현되었다. 儒家的 생활에 젖어 있었던 조선의 한 선비는 朝鮮末期의 특수상황에서 仙家와 老莊思想에 넘나들면서 虛靜之心의 마음과 無邪慾으로 시대적 상황을 극복해 보고자 하였을 것이다. 이는 혼돈의 시대에 대한 悔恨의 인생을 淡淡한 심정으로, 고통을 초탈한 平淡의 경지를 추구하고자 함이다. 요컨대 石邨의 이러한 번뇌들은 고스란히 그의 붓끝에 녹아들어 平淡한 風格으로 표출되었다 하겠다.

영문 초록

This thesis is to examine aesthetic characteristics in calligraphy with Korean alphabet of Seokchon Yun Yong-gu (石邨尹用求, December 13th, 1853 –1939), a great scholar and a famous, master calligrapher in late Joseon. In the year of 2011, however, he was evaluated as the last scholarly painter of Joseon; a politician with royalism and; a great man who lived a life of a hermit in time of anarchy and the fall of nation. He is also considered as one of four figures of Daehan Empire (帝國四家) which include; Min Young-hwan (閔泳煥, 1861-1965) who committed suicide for Protectorate Treaty between Korea and Japan (乙巳勒約) and the exiles Min Young-ik (閔泳翊, 1860-1914) and Lee Hoe-young (李會榮, 1867-1932). His such self-reliant fidelity and resistance against Japanese imperialism is well displayed on his paintings and writings. Classification of his works and their aesthetic characteristics are as follows. His calligraphy with Korean alphabet remains in full-length (80 copies of 80 volumes and 10 copies of 10 volumes) manuscripts of Jeongsagiram (뎡​긔람) and Dongsagiram (동​긔람) and these works are expressed with rough and calm court style of writing by a male calligrapher (男筆宮體) through escaping from standardized calligraphic rule while staying in fundamental frame of the court style. Not intertwined with worldly affairs or empathy through the virtue of inner self, Seokchon tries to purify his spirit with his calm temperament and to be united into one together with things in nature. Through this, he intends to keep away from evil desires, to calm his temperament based on the law of nature and to practice heavenly providence and fidelity. It is said that one s writings are revelation of his heart. Therefore, the hermit s serene life is fully expressed in his works in a calm atmosphere. In addition, study on these works serves as important materials for future studies on court male calligraphers transcription with Korean alphabet. It is because Seokchon Yun Yong-gu translated Chinese classics of Jeongsagiram and Dongsagiram in Korean and wrote them with the court style as a nobleman of the royal family, an official of the court and a male scholar, considering that the court style has been defined as the calligraphic font used by court ladies so far. Thus, the definition of court style should be corrected to the font used for transcription originated from the court of Joseon Dynasty.
