이광사ㆍ이영익 <鯉魚圖>의 心法生命에 관한 小考

국문 초록

본 연구는 조선후기 18세기에 활동한 이광사·이영익 두 부자가 합작으로 그린 <鯉魚圖>에 담긴 뜻을 조명하고 있다. 士禍와 黨爭의 역사를 배경으로 탄생된 이 그림은 시작된 지 20년이 지나서야 완성되었는데, 그 시작은 원교체로 유명한 圓嶠 李匡師(1705 -1777)가 하였고, 마무리는 그의 차남인 信齋 李令翊(1738-1780)이 하였다. 시작과 마무리의 공백 20년이란 세월은 무슨 사건이 일어났는지, 그 사건으로 하여금 그림에 담겨진 사연들이 어떤 내용을 담고 있는지를 살펴보고, 그들의 사상 철학인 양명심학과 관련지어 <鯉魚圖>의 심학적 가치와 예술생명을 고찰해보는 내용이다. 이광사가 활동했던 18세기는 倭亂과 胡亂 등 戰亂으로 인해 사회기풍이 타락하고, 당쟁으로 인하여 조정이 분열되어 있었으며, 주자학과 주자학적 정치이념이 도전을 받으며, 양명학과 실학이 출현하던 시대였다. 서예 방면에서는 서예의 원형 회복을 위한 탐구가 심화되어, 조선의 ‘眞’의 예술정신과 맞물려 새로운 서예시대가 창출되었다. 이와 관련하여 원교의 창조적인 심미․창작활동은 스승 하곡 정제두의 영향 아래 良知와 靈明性으로 心書合一을 구축하였으며, 신재 이영익은 학문과 글씨를 부친으로부터 고스란히 물려받은 학자로 두 사람 모두 그림에 상당한 조예를 갖추고 있었다. 이광사·이영익은 자신과 만물을 막힘없이 소통하게 하는 주체가 인간의 마음이라고 보았다. 誠과 中을 근본적인 덕으로 삼아 愼獨과 省察로 致中和에 나아가 천하의 理를 얻고 中의 자리를 이루어서 만물을 化育하는 심미경계로 일관한 <鯉魚圖>는 工拙의 妙境보다는 ‘心卽理’를 표출하는 性善的 인간의 완성과 그 性善의 회복에 예술적 가치를 想定해볼 수 있다. 복잡다난한 역경 속에서도 진정한 자아의 구심점을 찾아가는 이광사ㆍ이영익 부자의 주체적 신념은, 인간 自尊의 高揚과 사회적 질서·화합을 위한 예술생명으로 높이 평가되어야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This study examined the meaning in which was painted by Gwangsa Lee and Yeongik Lee who lived in late Joseon dynasty, 18th century. This painting was created with the historical background such as the massacre of scholars and the political party strife, and it could be completed 20 years after it has been started. Wongyo Lee, Gwangsa, who was famous for the calligraphic style of Wongyo, has started to paint this painting, and Sinjae Lee, Yeongik, Wongyo’s second son, has completed it. This study examined what happened during the gap of 20 years and what stories were contained in this painting and investigated the value of school of mind and the life of art of by relating to Yangming school of mind. In 18th century, the society was degenerated by suffering wars such as Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592 and the Manchu war of 1636, and the royal court was splitted by the political party strife. Also, Neo-confucianism and Neo-confucian political belief were challenged, and the doctrines of Wang Yangming and the realist school of Confucianism started to emerge. In terms of calligraphy, the quest for recovering the origin of calligraphy intensified, so that it brought in a new era of calligraphy engaged with Joseon’s artistic spirit of ‘Genuine’. In this context, Wongyo’s aesthetic and creative activities attained the stage of the unity of mind and calligraphy with the innate knowledge of the good and the spirituality under the influence of his teacher, Hagok Jeong, Jedu, and Sinjae Lee, Yeongik was the scholar who succeeded his father’s learning and calligraphy. Both Wongyo and Sinjae had profound knowledge of paintings. Gwangsa Lee and Yeongik Lee considered that the subject to communicate with all things was human’s mind. maintained the aesthetic boundary of influencing and cultivating all things in obtaining Principle of the world and attaining the stage of Equilibrium by reaching Equilibrium-Harmony with being careful even when alone and introspection making Sincerity and Equilibrium a fundamental virtue, and it could postulate that the artistic values were in the completion of the inherent goodness of man who expressed that the mind is Principle and the recovery of the inherent goodness rather than the profound boundary of elaborateness and clumsiness. Gwangsa Lee and Yeongik Lee’s subjective belief that found the pivot of the genuine ego in complicated and difficult adversity should be highly esteemed as the life of art for the enhancement of self-respect and the social order and unity.
