국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 조선후기 여성종교사 서술의 새로운 방향을 탐색하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 세 가지 작업을 수행한다. 첫째, 현재의 '종교' 개념이 조선후기 여성종교사 서술에 적합한지를 검토한다. 여기서는 서구에서 유래한 근대적 '종교' 개념이 근대이전 비서구 사회의 종교적 현실을 서술하는 데 적합하지 않으며, 따라서 조선후기 여성종교사를 서술하기 위해서는 종교에 대한 좀 더 유연하고 복합적인 관점이 필요함을 밝힌다. 다음으로, 최근 젠더 논의의 주요 의제인 몸의 문제를 조선후기 여성종교사 서술에 어떻게 적용할 수 있는지를 검토한다. 여기서는 가부장적 조선후기 사회에서 여성 관련 금기가 여성의 몸을 둘러싸고 조직된 방식, 계례나 혼례 같은 통과의례가 여성 주체를 형성한 방식, 성적 절제나 실현이 여성의 욕망과 섹슈얼리티를 구현했던 방식에 대한 탐구 가능성을 논한다. 끝으로, 종교적 믿음과 실천의 핵심인 신앙대상이 지닌 젠더 측면을 검토한다. 여기서는 초자연적 힘, 우주적 원리, 신적 존재 등의 신앙대상 유형에 따라 젠더 논리가 상이하게 작동하는 방식을 살펴보고, 가부장적 조선후기 사회의 안팎에 걸쳐 있던 여성적 신앙대상과 여자귀신에 대한 탐구 가능성을 모색한다. 이상의 논의는 조선후기 여성종교사 서술의 새로운 전망을 구축하기 위한 토대가 될 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this thesis is to examine some possible ways of (re)writing women's religious history in late Joseon period of Korea. Firstly, I examine the suitability of our concept of 'religion' in studying the religious history of premodern society. I show that the modern concept of 'religion' which were originated from the West is not suitable for describing religious phenomena of premodern non-Western societies such as late Joseon society. Secondly, I examine how to apply recent issues of body such as ritual and sexuality to studying women's religious history in late Joseon period. I show the necessities to elucidate the ways how female taboos were organized around women's blood of menstruation, and the ways how the rites of passage such as women's initiation and marriage were organized according to gender rules. And I show how sexual abstinence concretize women's desires. Lastly, I examine the gender aspect of the objects of religious believes. I analyse the gender aspects of the ultimate reality such as supernatural forces, cosmic principles and personal deities. I also show the necessity of elucidating the meaning and role of goddesses and female ghosts in late Joseon period. Through these analyses, I suggest how to construct some visions for studying women's religious history in late Joseon period.
