청소년의 국민정체성이 통일의식에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

이 연구는 한국 청소년의 국민정체성이 통일의식에 미치는 영향에 대해 분석했다. 연구의 주요 내용은 다음과 같다. 한국 청소년의 국민정체성은 민족적 정체성과 시민적 정체성으로 나누어졌다. 시민적 정체성은 그들의 통일의식과 관련된 모든 조사 항목에 유의미한 영향을 미치고 있었다. 반면에 민족적 정체성은 통일의식과 관련된 2개의 조사 항목에만 유의미한 영향을 미치고 있었다. 게다가 시민적 정체성은 가장 강한 영향을 미치는 변수였다. 시민적 정체성은 통일의 필요성, 평화적 통일, 통일비용 부담, 남한체제로의 통일, 통일한국에 대한 기대 인식에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤다. 한편, 민족적 정체성은 남한체제로의 통일, 통일한국에 대한 기대 인식에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤다. 연구의 의의는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 국민정체성과 통일의식 사이의 관련성에 대해 평가했다는 의의를 가진다. 통일의식과 관련한 선행연구의 대부분은 통일에 대한 국민들의 인식과 태도의 변화를 기술하거나, 인구사회학적 집단 사이의 통일의식에 대한 차이를 비교하는 데 그쳤기 때문이다. 둘째, 통일의식의 향상을 위해서는 시민적 정체성에 대한 관심이 필요하다는 것을 지적했다는 의의를 가진다. 강한 시민적 정체성을 가진 청소년들이 통일의식에 대해 더 긍정적인 태도를 가지고 있다는 것이 드러났기 때문이다.

영문 초록

This study analyzed the influence of Korean adolescents’ national identity on their unification consciousness. Major findings are as follows. The national identity of Korean adolescents was divided into ethnic identity and civic identity. While their civic identity had a significant effect on all aspects of their unification consciousness, their ethnic identity had a significant effect on only two aspects of their consciousness. It was evident that the civic identity was the most influential variable. Their civic identity had a positive effect on their opinion on the necessity of national unification, the peaceful unification, the unification costs, the unification by South Korea’s system, and the expectation of a unified Korea. On the other hand, their ethnic identity had a positive effect on their opinion on the unification by South Korea’s system, and the expectation of a unified Korea. The significance of this paper is as follows. Firstly, it significantly evaluated the relationship between national identity and unification consciousness. Previous studies on unification consciousness focused on the changes in the perceptions and attitudes of people for national unification, and compared the differences between sociodemographic groups for the unification consciousness. Secondly, it significantly highlighted the positive effects of having an interest in civic identity. The study found that adolescents with a strong civic identity tended to have a more positive attitude toward unification consciousness.
