영문 초록

In this era, imagination has taken a central place in contemporary thinking. However, the study of the mechanism and methodology of human imagination has not been fully explored. Therefore this paper will investigate the possibility of pure imagination through Strange Case of Dr. J ekyll and Mr. Hyde, employing Bachelard's concepts of imagination and Lacanian concepts of fantasy and the Real. According to Lacan, as the subject enters into the Symbolic Order from its primordial state, it is inescapably subjugated to the socioeconomic structure resulting in an unbridgeable gap between reality and primordial satisfaction. Fantasy is derived by this gap. Bachelard distinguishes reverie from fantasy or illusion and insists that selfless reveries on image and elements lead us to the esemplastic power of imagination. In this regard, this paper elicits the possibility of imagination as the way of traversing fantasy and encountering the Real through 'reverie on literary work' and expounds a motivating power of literary imagination that broadens and cultivates the minds of people in this society.
