국문 초록

색채어의 번역은 각 민족 간의 언어와 문화의 차이로 인하여 경우에 따라서는 對等飜譯이 거의 불가능하기까지 한 難題 중의 難題라고 할 수 있다. 특히 중국고전문학작품 가운데 색채어가 가장 많이 출현하고 있는 《紅樓夢》의 경우에는 그 어려움이 더 할 수밖에 없다. 본고에서는 《紅樓夢》의 색채어 중에서도 譯入語로의 전환의 어려움을 넘어서서 誤譯의 우려까지 있는 ‘靑자가 포함되어 있는 복합어’의 번역에 초점을 맞춰 살펴보았다. ‘靑色’은 중국어어휘 가운데 그 의미가 가장 모호한 색채어로서 여러 종류의 색감을 나타내고 있다. 고대로부터 綠色⋅藍色⋅黑色을 나타냈으며, 심지어 어떤 학자는 白色과 灰色까지 나타낸다고 주장하기도 한다. 이렇듯 다양한 색감을 나타낼 수 있는 ‘靑色’이 문장 안에서 과연 어떤 색을 의미하는지를 정확하게 이해하고 번역해 낸다는 것은 결코 쉬운 일이 아니다. 譯者가 《紅樓夢》의 색채어 ‘靑色’을 번역하면서 봉착하는 난관은 바로 이러한 ‘多義性’과 ‘模糊性’에 기인한다고 볼 수 있다. ‘靑色’이 지니는 ‘다의성’과 ‘모호성’을 이해하기 위하여 본고에서는 먼저 ‘靑色’의 本義 및 시대의 흐름에 따라 변화된 의미를 추적해 보았으며, 《紅樓夢》에 출현하는 ‘靑자류 어휘’들을 추출해서 분류해 보았고, 英譯本⋅日譯本⋅朝鮮語譯本⋅韓譯本을 대상으로 삼아 ‘靑자 포함 복합어’에 대한 각각의 飜譯 實例를 비교⋅분석하였다. 이로써 ‘誤譯’과 ‘생략 번역’의 현상 및 역자로서는 해결하기 어려운 한계 등을 摘示하였다. 본고의 논의를거쳐 《紅樓夢》에 나타나고 있는 ‘靑자 포함 복합어’의 번역에 대한 수정과 보완의 바탕이 마련될 수 있기를 바라며, 나아가서는 향후 《紅樓夢》 색채어 번역의 문제점들을 해결하는데 미진하나마 일부 참고가 될 수 있기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

The translation of color term is known to be extremely difficult, even impossible when it comes to a literal translation due to the inherent linguistic and cultural differences among ethnic groups. In the case of A Dream of Red Mansions, which contains a great number of color term, the difficulty of translation is aggravated. The following paper focuses particularly on the translation of ‘compound words of the Color Category Qing(靑) of Chinese Language’ as they are not only difficult to do rough translation of but are also often subject to mistranslation. ‘Qing(靑)’ is the most ambiguous color term and it expresses a diverse range of colors. Since ancient times, it expressed blue, navy, and black. Some scholars even contend that it expresses white and gray. Therefore, it is incredibly difficult to recognize exactly what kind of color is referred to by ‘Qing(靑)’ in context and then correctly translate the words. The difficulty the translator faced when translating the color term ‘Qing(靑)’ in A Dream of Red Mansions stems from both polysemy and ambiguity. In ordre to fully grasp the polysemy and ambiguity which ‘Qing(靑)’ entails, then present paper identified the essential meaning of ‘Qing(靑)’ and traced changes its meaning to different periods. In addition, the paper also attempts to identify compound words of the Color Category Qing(靑) and classify them into categories, which in turn would be compared and analyzed with different translations in English, Japanese, and Korean, as well as translations in Chinese Korean Language. In this way, mistranslation, translation with omission, and other limitation that the translator was unable to resolve are indicated. It is hoped that this discussion contributes to lay a foundation for the revision and modification of the translation of compound words of the Color Category Qing(靑) and provide some reference when resolving issues of the translation of color terms of A Dream of Red Mansions in the future.
