국문 초록

연구목적: 최근 산업경제학 분야의 플랫폼 전략에 대한 연구에서는 여러 사업자들이 맞물린 네트워크적 구조에서 중개적 역할을 하는 사업자의 역할에 대하여 관심을 기울이고 있다. 종합무역상사의 제도적 배경과 사업의 전개과정을 중개형 플랫폼의 측면에서 살펴보면 시장개발과 공급 거래선 개발의 두 가지 측면에서의 활동이 네트워크구조 전반의 시너지를 창출한 것을 발견할 수 있다. 아울러, '상사위기론'으로 요약되는 환경변화의 내용과 대응전략을 생각해볼 수 있다. 논문구성/논리: 연구의 전반적 내용과 구조에 대한 설명에 이어 (제I장), 이론적 배경을 문헌연구를 중심으로 제시하였다(제II장). 제II장에서 제시된 이론적 내용에 기반하여 제III장에서는 종합무역상사의 제도적 배경과 정책지원의 내용을 문헌자료와 인터뷰를 통해 역사적 방법론으로 분석하였다. 특히, 주요 정책 결정자와 경영현장의 책임자들에 대한 인터뷰를 통해 문헌연구와 역사적 연구의 내용을 재검토 하였다. 제IV장에서는 정책적 의미와 함께 종합무역상사에 주는 전략적 의미를 도출하였으며, 제V장에서는 본 연구의 내용을 종합 정리하고 연구의 의미와 한계, 앞으로의 과제를 제시하였다. 결과: 플랫폼 전략에 대한 최근의 연구들은 종합무역상사의 제도적 배경, 구조와 전략에 대해서 다양한 시사점을 제공한다. '상사위기론'으로 대표되는 종합무역상사의 구조적 과제에 대하여, 플랫폼 전략의 연구들은 사업개발과 공급거래선 개발을 심화하는 중개형 플랫폼 본연의 활동을 더욱 심화하는 노력이 필요함을 보여준다. 또한 국내외 환경변화가 주는 전략적 의미를 플랫폼 리더십을 위한 '보조금'의 역할에 비추어 생각해 볼 수 있다. 독창성/가치: 기존의 종합무역상사에 대한 연구들이 상사활동의 내부적 경쟁요인에 초점을 둔 반면, 본 연구는 네트워크적 구조에서 다양한 사업자들을 이어주는 역할에 초점을 두었다. 주요 정책결정자와 경영자에 대한 인터뷰와 관련 기록들은 다른 연구와 차별화되는 공헌이라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Purpose: With the rise of 'Networked Business', the role of 'Intermediaries' has been highlighted. Mediating the various players in the network, intermediaries can enjoy the platform leadership. Reflected against the experience of the General Trading Companies, two critical features are identified in these attempts - market development and supplier development. How could the General Trading Companies lead the related players? What is the reason for the 'relative decline' of the General Trading Companies? This study attempts to analyze the role of General Trading Companies through the lens of platform strategy. Composition/Logic: Following the general overview (Chapter I), theoretical background of the study is summarized (Chapter II). Based on the key theory constructs delineated in Chapter II, there is a historical analysis on the Korean General Trading Companies in Chapter III. Field interviews with the policy makers and the managers involved in the trading practice cross-validates the historical analysis. In Chapter IV, policy implication from this research is identified. Limits of the study and future research implication are summarized in Chapter V. Findings: Recent studies in 'platform strategy' provide meaningful insights for the General Trading Companies. Despite the relative decline (compared against their high days in the 1970s), the General Trading Companies still have opportunities as long as they can sustain their advantages in the market development and supplier development. Concept of platform envelopment provides an insight. Pivotal role of the government support (especially trade financing privileges) can also be explained through the lens of platform leadership. Originality/Value: Contrary to the past studies, this study attempts to understand the role of the General Trading Companies as the pivotal platform player mediating the network. Interview with the policy makers provide evidential support. Strategic implication is drawn out of this frame of analysis.
