한국감리교회의 주춧돌을 놓은 아펜젤러 선교사: 아펜젤러 한국선교 130주년을 기념하며

국문 초록

올해 2015년은 헨리 게어할드 아펜젤러(Henry Gerhard Appenzeller, 1858-1902)의 한국선교 130주년이 되는 해이다. 한국 에서 그의 활동은 당시 다른 선교사들과 비교해 볼 때(예를 들어 언더우드 의 31년 사역, 1885-1916) 비록 17년(1885-1902)이라는 짧은 기간 동안에 이루어졌지만, 아펜젤러는 한국감리교회의 주춧돌을 놓았을 뿐만 아니라 한국 개신교의 발전과 한국 근대화를 위해 크게 기여하였다. 이 글에서 필자는 아펜젤러의 삶과 사역을 주로 다루었는데, 그의 생애는 두 개의 특성으로, 그리고 그의 사역은 총 일곱 개의 특성들로 설명하였다. 우선 아펜젤러는 중생을 경험한 후 감리교인이 되었고, 그의 아버지는 아펜젤러가 장로교 목사가 되기를 원했지만 그는 감리교 선교사가 되었다. 한편, 아펜젤러는 초기 한국에 온 개신교 선교사들 중의 한사람으 로서 선교 초기 미국과 한국 정부의 조언을 수용했던 착한 사람이었다. 아펜젤러는 쌀(rice) 혹은 명목상의 그리스도인이 아닌 진정한 기독교 인을 만드는 것을 목적으로 사역했다. 물론 여전히 논쟁적이기는 하지 만, 아펜젤러는 한국에서 교회를 세운 초기 설립자들 중의 한 사람이었 다. 또한 그는 한국의 근대화와 기독교 교육의 발전을 위해 공헌했던 교육가였을 뿐만 아니라, 당시 한국에 거주하던 선교사들을 포함 대부 분의 외국인들을 이끌었던 유능한 지도자이기도 했다. 마지막으로 중요한 점은 아펜젤러가 계몽운동가와 독립운동가로서 한국의 근대화, 민주화, 그리고 독립을 위해 기여했다는 점이다. 요컨대, 아펜젤러는 영적인 회심을 경험했던 진정한 기독교인이었 다. 그리고 당시 외국인들, 한국인들과 사회적으로 좋은 관계를 맺고 있었던 착한 사람이었다. 게다가 그는 수용과 저항의 때를 분별할 줄 아는 사람이었다. 즉 그는 한국 사람들이 복음을 들을만한 준비가 될 때까지 미국과 한국 정부의 지시를 받아들였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 미국이 일본과 같은 강대국들의 한국 점령을 암묵적으로 허락하거나 고종이 근대민주국가로의 변화에 대해 거부했을 때는 미국과 한국정부 에 당당히 저항하였다. 그러므로 아펜젤러의 한국선교 130주년을 기념할 때, 한국의 모든 개신교회들은 반드시 그의 열정적인 영성, 따뜻한 사회성, 냉철한 분별력에 관해 반드시 재고해야만 한다.

영문 초록

The year of 2015 is the 130th anniversary of Henry Gerhard Appenzeller’s missions in Korea. Even though he spent his short time(17 years) in Korea from his arrival of 1885 to his miserable death of 1902 in comparing to other mission pioneers in the early time of Protestant missions in Korea(e.g., Underwood’s 31 years from 1885 to 1916), Appenzeller, who was the cornerstone of the Korean Methodist Church, greatly contributed for the development of all protestant churches in Korea and the modernization of Korea. In this paper, the writer mainly deals with Appenzeller’s life and work by highlighting his two characters about his life and steven characteristics about his work in Korea. In terms of his life, firstly, after experiencing spiritual rebirth he became a real Methodist believer, and then, Appenzeller became a Methodist missionary, although his father wanted him to be a Presbyterian minister. On the other hand, Appenzeller was one of the first protestant missionaries in Korea, and a good person who followed the guidance of both the United States and Korean government. Appenzeller purposed to gain real Christians instead of rice or nominal Christians. Even if it is still controversial, Appenzeller was one of the first church founders in Korea. Also, he was not only a good educator for the development of Korean modernization and of Christian education, but also a competent leader for almost all foreigners including all foreign missionaries in Korea at his time. Last but by no means least, as an enlightener and independentista Appenzeller contributed for Korea’s modernization, democracy, and independence. In short, Appenzeller was a real Christian who experienced spiritual conversion, and a good social person having a good relationship with both foreigners and Koreans. Moreover, Appenzeller could discern the time of acceptance and of resistance. That is, he was following the direction of Korean and the United States’ government until the Korean people were ready to listen to the Gospel. Nevertheless, when the United States allowed the imperial nations(e,g. Japan) to occupy Korea in silence, and the Korean King(Kojong) refused the request of the modern democracy in Korea, Appenzeller resisted the two(the United States and Korean government). Therefore, in celebrating the 130th anniversary of Appenzeller’s missions in Korea, all protestant churches in Korea must reconsider the passionate spirituality, warm sociality, and cool-headed discernment of Appenzeller.
