불교의 모신(母神) 하리티(Hārītī) 신앙의 형성과 변천 연구

국문 초록

하리티Hārītī는 불교의 여신이자 모신母神이나, 본래 인도 토착 신격인 야차녀(yakṣiṇī)로서 아이를 잡아먹는 천연두 역신疫神이었다. 한역불전에서는 ‘귀자모鬼子母’로 더 많이 알려져 왔다. 하리티는 탄트라를 포함한 경율론 삼장과 불교 역사서 및 인도 여행기 등에 광범위하게 등장하는데, 하리티의 고고미술사적 연구는 많았지만, 이와 같은 불교문헌에 기초한 정리 분석작업은 별로 없었다. 본 연구는 불교문헌을 중심으로 하리티 교설을 분석, 종합함으로써 하리티 신격과 그 신앙의 성격을 이해해 보고자 한 것이다. 세부적으로는 하리티 설화를 다룬 문헌을 비교 검토하고, 불교문헌 속의 하리티 이미지를 성격별로 분류하였다. 또한 한역과 팔리문헌을 비교하여 하리티 이름의 기원을 유추해 보고, 귀자모와 환희 등의 한역 이름의 조성 과정을 분석했다. 또한『유부비나야잡사』등을 통해 설일체유부 사원의 하리티 의례를 살펴보았는데, 사원 내에서 하리티 신앙이 성행한 점, 그리고 하리티설화와 관련하여 승가의 공양의례와 계율이 정해지고, 사원의 제사가 시행된 점 등을 알 수 있었다. 하리티의 대중적인 영향력에 힘입어 사원에서 그녀는 재가 기부의 중요한 중심이었다고 평가된다. 불교문헌 속에서 하리티가 여러 이미지와 성격의 변화를 보이기도 했지만, 일관되게 견지한 것은 아이를 동반한 형태였다. 이것은 불교에서 그녀의 위상과 역할을 상징한다고 할 수 있다. 하리티는 모성적 존재로 불교에 수용되어, 어린이 보호와 전염병치유, 후사와 안산 등이 기원되고, 나아가 물질적 풍요와 세속적인 복잡한 일의 해결을 책임지는 신격이었다. 이와 같은 성격의 하리티는 여러 지역으로 불교가 전파될 때 불교의 여성적인 얼굴을 제공함으로써 사람들을 보다 용이하게 불교에 귀의할 수 있게 만들었던 것으로 보인다. 하리티 신앙의 세속적이고 대중적인 성격은 한편으로 지역과 시대별로 하리티 신격의 변형가능성을 높여 주었던 것 같다.

영문 초록

Hārītī is one of the representative female deities of Buddhism as a Mother Goddess. Originally, this goddess was a smallpox goddess, who was said to eat children, as one of the several types of the yakṣiṇī that belongs to evil deities in the ethnic indigenous faiths of India. Hārītī appears widely from Nikayas through Mahayana Sutras to Tantra texts, and not only in the three canonical works of sutras, vinayas, and treatises, but also throughout historiographies of Buddhism and travelogues of eminent monks. Although there have been many historical studies on Hārītī in the fields of art history and archeology, nonetheless, there have been few analytical works on the basis of Buddhist texts. This article analyzed comparatively various Buddhist texts on Hārītī, seeking the characteristics of the images and rituals and worship patterns of Hārītī. Among the images of Hārītī, the figure of loving mother holding her baby is predominant in its history of art, although we can sometimes find Hārītī in the figure of archetypical ogress similar to the Hindu Goddess Kali. This shows the coexistence of the Buddhist appropriation of the Hārītī faith and its traditional worship forms. On the other hand, the image of Hārītī in Buddhist scriptures shows her as a novice, sotāpanna in the first saintly status, or loving mother with her maternity in emphasis. In Mahayana sutras, she is portrayed mainly as the guardian deity of believers in sutras, the Lotus Sutra being its representative text. The Hārītī faith can be divided into daily rituals in temples and householders’ private worship. In Pali texts, the offering of food to Hārītī takes place in householders’homes, while the offering is described to take place in temples according to standardized format in the Sarvāstivāda texts, which even include the recordings of the sacrifices for the son of Hārītī. Householders’ worship of Hārītī had diverse goals, including the treatment of epidemics, getting a child, and comfortable childbirth, the abundance of material goods. The widest circulation of the faith, however, took place in the Tantra tradition. Especially, the Hārītī tantra shows the typical characteristics of Yakṣiṇī Sadhana. From this, the Hārītī tantra might be appraised to be a variant of the Hārītī faith as well as the synthesis of it and its archetypical and traditional Yakṣiṇī faith. These facts might be thought to show the vitality of the Hārītī faith together with its geographically wide circulation for a long time.
