후스(胡適)의 선종사연구와 과학방법론

국문 초록

후스(胡適, 1891—1962)는 근대 중국의 대표적인 계몽사상가이자 학자이다. 그는 문학, 역사, 철학 등 폭넓은 분야 걸쳐 학술활동을 했다. 1920년대 그는 선종사 연구에 집중했다. 그의 불교연구는 방법론 면에서 이른바 ‘불교인’의 불교 연구와 달랐다. 그는 선종사를 연구하면서 선종 내부의 권위와 전통을 거부했다. 아울러 신앙적 차원에서 선종사 연구를 행하는 데도 반대했다. 그는 선종도 역사의 산물임을 인정하고 역사적 사실에 기반해서 연구를 수행하고자 했다. 그는 먼저 기존 전통에 대해 의심했고, 아울러 그것에 대해 검증을 시도했다. 그는 확인되지 않은 것에 대해서는 판단을 보류해야 함을 역설했다. 이런 그의 학문 태도는 불가지론(agnosticism)을 제기한 영국의 토마스 헉슬리(Thomas Huxley)와 실험주의(Pragmatism)를 주장한 미국의 존 듀이(John Dewey)에게서 영향을 받았다. 후스는 이를 과학방법론이라고 명명했고, 이 방법론을 선종사 연구에 적극적으로 활용했다. 근대 중국에서 후스는 순수하게 학술로서 불교 연구를 선보였다.

영문 초록

Hu Shih (1891-1962) was an enlightenment thinker and scholar that represented modern China. The range of his academic activities included literature, history, philosophy, etc. In 1920s, he focused his study on the history of Zen Buddhism. His Buddhist research differed in its methodology from that of the so-called Buddhists. In his study, he rejected the authority and traditions existing within Zen Buddhism. He also opposed to approaching the history of Zen Buddhism on religious level. He acknowledged that Zen Buddhism was also a historical product, and proposed that it should be studied based on historical facts. To do so, first, he doubted the existing traditions and tried to verify them. He asserted that people should reserve their judgment on unverified facts. This academic position of his was influenced by Thomas Huxley’s agnosticism and John Dewey’s pragmatism. Hu Shih called this the scientific methodology, and actively utilized it in his research on the history of Zen Buddhism. He demonstrated a purely academic study of Buddhism in modern China.
