중국문학의 자국화 방식에 대한 일고찰

국문 초록

이 글은 중국의 당대 작가 위화의 《허삼관 매혈기》와 이것을 각색한 한국 영화 〈허삼관〉을 대상으로 외국 문학이 자국의 문화 텍스트로 전환되는 양상에 대해 탐색한 것이다. 영화는 사회의 가치 체계와 문화적 기호를 담아내는 텍스트이기 때문에 대중의 취향과 시대적 분위기에 민감하게 반응하며 생산된다. 더불어 외국 문학을 영화화한 작품은 자국의 문화적 영토에 적응하기 위한 독특한 각색 전략을 취하게 되고 이 전략은 당대의 사회 담론 및 문화적 코드, 각색 영화를 둘러싼 산업 환경적 요소 등에 의해 결정된다. 이에 영화 〈허삼관〉은 과거를 향한 감수성을 소환하고 있는 문화적 분위기에 기대 가족을 위해 헌신하며 살아간 아버지 이야기를 중심서사로 삼았다. 또한 대중의 정서를 의식해 원작 소설의 배경이 되는 중국의 특정한 역사적 시기를 정치, 사회적 이슈가 부재한 한국의 시공간으로 압축했다. 이로 인해 원작 소설 《허삼관 매혈기》와 영화 〈허삼관〉의 주제 의식과 텍스트를 둘러싼 담론에 차이가 발생하였다. 원작은 중국 현대사의 흐름 속에서 개인에게 부여되는 삶의 무게를 매혈이라는 기제로 버텨내고, 매혈로 또한 자신의 존재 가치를 확인해 나간 역사 속 한 남성에 대해 말하고 있는 반면 영화 〈허삼관〉은 과거의 시대와 역사에 관한 어떠한 가치 판단도 품지 않은 채, 아버지 허삼관의 가족을 위한 희생을 부각시키는데 중점을 두었다. 이와 같이 원작 소설과 각색 영화가 묘사한 세계의 다름에 의해 외국 문학을 자국화 한 텍스트가 문화적 전환 과정을 거치며 지향하고자 한 바와 품고자 한 담론에 대해 고찰할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This study was to explore the aspects of the conversion of a foreign literary work into a localized cultural text, targeting Chronicle of a Blood Merchant by Yu Hua (余華), a Chinese writer of the time and Xu Sanguan, a Korean film adapted on this novel. Films are produced sensitively responding to the tastes of the public and the atmosphere of the times, since they are the texts that carry the value systems of the society and the cultural symbols. In addition, films adapted on foreign literary works are given their unique adoption strategies to adapt them to the locally cultural territories, and these strategies are decided on by taking into account the social discourses of the time, the cultural codes and the elements of the industrial circumstances around such films. Thus, the film Xu Sanguan used the stories of a father devoting his life for his family as the central structure of the narration, leaning against the wall of a cultural atmosphere that summons the sensitivity towards the past. Also, aware of the emotions of the public, a specific historic time in China which constitutes the background of the original novel was compressed into a certain space and time in Korea which lacks political and social issues. This has brought about the difference in the discourses surrounding the thematic consciousness and the text of the original novel, Chronicle of a Blood Merchant and the film, Xu Sanguan. The former tells the stories of a man who, with the mechanism of selling the blood, not only endures the weight of life given to him in the stream of China’s modern history, but confirms his existence values, while the latter puts its emphasis on the sacrifice of the father, Xu Sanguan who devotes his life for the good of his family, without passing any value judgment on the past era and history. Like the above, a consideration could be made about what the localized text were aimed at and the discourse that it was intended to hold through the process of the cultural conversion of the foreign literary work, because difference arose between the two worlds described by the original novel and the film adapted on it.
