탈북자 소설에 나타난 ‘미리 온 통일’:로기완을 만났다 와 ｢옥화｣를 중심으로

국문 초록

한반도 통일을 남북한 두 국가 사이의 관계 진전만이 아니라 한반도를 살아가는 사람들 사이에 의미 있고 인간적인 관계를 만드는 과정으로 정의한다면, 탈북자를 대하는 태도나 그들과 맺는 관계의 성격을 ‘미리 온 통일’이 맞닥뜨린 도전이자 시금석으로 삼을 수 있다. 이 논문은 탈북자와 어떻게 관계 맺을 것인가 하 는 문제를 끈질기게 천착한 두 작품, 로기완을 만났다 (2011년)와 ｢옥화｣(2014년)를 상세히 읽으면서 거기에 그려진 ‘미리 온 통일’의 양상을 살펴본다. 전자는 탈북자 로기완을 난민으로 또 고통과 죄의식을 가진 인간으로 설정하고 그의 자취를 밟아가는 화자의 글쓰기 과정을 공감의 진정성을 위한 훈련으로 만들지만, 그 과정에서 로를 화자의 자기긍정의 매개로 환원하는 경향을 드러낸다. 반면 후자에서 결함 있는 이웃/타자로서의 탈북자와 맺는 관계는 개별 됨됨이를 넘는 ‘비인격적’ 차원을 내포함으로써 역설적으로 상호주체성을 확보한다. 두 작품이 나타내는 차이는 탈북자와 맺는 관계의 밀도에서 비롯되며 여기에는 남북의 ‘특수관계’를 제대로 고려하는가 여부도 중요하게 작용한다.

영문 초록

Considering that the unification of the Korean peninsula should mean a harmonious and meaningful relationship among the residents of the peninsula, as well as between the two Korean states, how to be related with North Korean defectors might serve as a test for the prospect of unification. This paper examines two literary works that deal with North Korean defectors, I Met Lokiwan and “Okhwa,” focusing on their representation of ‘unification in advance.’ The former characterizes a defector Lokiwan as a refugee with the same kind of suffering and guilty feeling as other human beings, and the narrator’s efforts to empathize with him is based on the commonality. In so doing, however, this novel betrays its tendency to reduce Lo to a medium for the narrator’s self-affirmation and, thus, fails to validate Lo’s singularity as a subject. On the other hand, in “Okhwa”, the narrator’s relation with defectors as defective neighbor/other obtains the level of genuine inter-subjectivity, paradoxically through including the dimension of ‘impersonality.’ This difference mainly arises from the difference in the density of the relationship between the narrator and the North Korean defector(s), which is, in turn, closely associated with whether and in what degree each story takes into account the inter-Korean special relations.
