국문 초록

<물결이 높던 날>은 그동안 다소 이질적으로 논의되었던 <후송>류와 <강>류를 아우를 수 있는, 서정인 초기 소설의 원형으로서의 의미를 지닌다고 할 수 있다. <물결이 높던 날>의 중심인물은 현수와 석호이다. 이들은 부산 송도 해변 주변에서의 현재적 시공간에 놓여있으나 끊임없이 과거의 시공간으로 이동한다. 현재와 과거의 시공간의 넘나듦은 가깝게는 오늘 아침 다방에서 명자를 만나는 것에서부터, 멀게는 한국전쟁 전의 석호의 상황까지 제시된다. 이와 같이 인물들은 혼재된 시공간성을 보여주는데, 이는 이야기의 구조 속에 플롯이 내면화된 서정인 초기 소설의 특징을 보여주고 있다. 실존적인 인물인 석호는 과거의 상처에서 벗어나지 못하고, 소시민적인 인물인 현수는 현실에서 여전히 소극적이다. 애증으로 고통 받는 석호나 짝사랑하다가 실연당하는 현수는 사랑에서만 실패하는 것이 아니라 친구사이인 서로도 소통하지 못한다. 소통 부재인 이들은 안타까운 상황을 각자가 직시할 뿐 개선의 여지를 찾지 못하는 것이다. 석호와 현수는 소통이 불가한 삶의 비극성을 깨닫고 힘겹게 지탱하며 살아가는 전형적인 서정인 초기 소설의 인물들의 특징을 보여주고 있다. 인물들의 실연과 소통 부재, 죽음 의식 등은 서정인 초기 소설의 중요한 특징들로 <물결이 높던 날>에서도 두드러지게 형상화된다. 특히 석호가 의식하는 전체와 부분의 불협화음은 화자의 부정적인 이미지화를 통해 더욱 어둡고 우울하게 제시되고 있는데, 이것은 석호의 내면적 고통의 실존적 상황을 뜻하는 것이며 동시에 서정인 초기 소설 세계의 비극적 인식을 단적으로 보여주고 있는 것이다. 그러므로 <물결이 높던 날>은 서정인 초기 소설의 원형으로서의 특징을 지닌다고 하겠다.

영문 초록

is considered already valuable for its possessing the characteristics of the original form of SEO Jeong-in's early novel. That is also one of these factors to include and in the same category which have been interpreted differently from each other so far. The main characters, Hyun-soo and Seok-ho are placed in the present space and time which are reached within approximately two hours from Songdo Beach, Busan. However, they recall not only their meetings with Myeong-jah in a cafe this morning which is the newest incident in their life so far but also the situation of Seok-ho before the outbreak of the Korean War, the oldest incident in their past. The characters cross between the present and the past as presenting all these confusing temporality and spatiality, and that is regarded as a feature of SEO Jeong-in's early novels which was a plot's being internalized in a structure of a story. As a man who has not yet let go of his past pain, Seok-ho is still suffering in his present life, and that is what makes him a person whom we can easily see in daily life. On the other hand, Hyun-soo wants to live as he does now, and as a petit bourgeois, he is still reluctant to make any attempt. The existential Seok-ho and Hyun-soo, the petit bourgeois, are describing the traditional features of the characters in SEO Jeong-in's early novels, who can never communicate with others in negative life. These motifs such as the failure of the love, the death and drinking are the factors that you can frequently face with in the novels by SEO Jeong-in. Even in , the breakups of the characters, the absence of communication, the war and the death feel even darker and more depressing as the speaker makes the images only negative. In particular, the discord between the whole and the parts that Seok-ho perceives tells the readers about the internal pain of Seok-ho, but at the same, the discord becomes a chance for Seok-ho to express his tragic outlook on the world. As described so far, provided the readers with an opportunity to see the confusing temporality and spatiality through those characters traveling between the present and the past, and plus, the novel used the existential Seok-ho and Hyun-so, the petit bourgeois, to actually materialize these people living in the absence of communication. Not only that, the novel presented the tragic outlook on the world by talking about the discord between the whole and the parts. Those features discussed above are understood as the most distinctive factors of SEO Jeong-in's early novels. Again, does contain the features of the original form of SEO Jeong-in's early novels, and that is why we should pay even greater attention to the novel.
