다층모형을 이용한 여성 노인의 우울감 결정 요인 추정

국문 초록

고령화는 신체적 건강 뿐 아니라 정신 건강의 쇠퇴도 동반할 수 있다. 우울감은 고령자의 정신건강을 위협하는 가장 흔한 요소 중 하나이다. 특히 남성 노인보다는 여성 노인의 우울감이 더 크다고 알려져 있다. 이 연구는 여성 노인의 우울감에 영향을 미치는 요인이 무엇인지를 천착한 대부분의 선행 연구들과 달리, 여성 노인의 개인적 특성이 미치는 영향 이외에 그가 처해 있는 맥락적ㆍ구조적 요인으로서 지방정부 공공지출의 영향에 초점을 맞춘다. 이같은 연구 목적에 부합하는 다층모형 분석 방법론을 활용, 여성노인의 개인적 특성들(연령, 배우자 유무, 신체활동 제약 유무, 취업여부, 학력, 가구소득, 형제자매 수 등)과 그가 살고 있는 지역사회의 맥락적ㆍ구조적 특성(거주지 기초자치단체의 노인복지 예산 지출)이 우울감 척도(CESD-10)에 미치는 영향을 추정한 결과, 배우자가 없거나, 신체활동에 제약이 있거나, 중졸 이하 저학력이거나, 형제자매 수가 적은 경우가 그렇지 않은 경우에 비해 우울감 정도가 심한 것으로 나타났다. 또한 이러한 개인적 특성이 동일하다고 하더라도, 노인 1인당 노인복지지출을 많이 하는 지자체에 거주하는 여성 노인이 그렇지 않은 지자체 거주자에 비해 평균적 우울감 정도도 낮고 배우자 유무에 따른 우울감 격차도 더 적은 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

Aging tends to be accompanied by decline in mental, as well as in physical health. Depression is one of the most significant factors that have been known to threaten mental health among the elderly. It has been frequently reported in the mental health literature that elderly women experience stronger depression than their male counterparts. Unlike the majority of preceding studies which aimed to evaluate the effects of the individual traits influencing old women's depression, the study tries to estimate the effects of local governments' welfare expenditures for the elderly, treating them as the structural contexts in which individual old women find themselves embedded. Employing a multi-level model method, the study estimates the magnitudes of the effects that the amount of per-capita welfare expenditures for the elderly made by a local government have on the strength of depressive feelings(measured on the CESD-10 scale) of old women living in the region, while controlling for the effects of their individual traits like age, education level, and etc. Those who are divorced or widowed, who have problems in performing daily activities, who have a middle-school(or lower) level of education, and who have fewer siblings are found to feel more depressive. Furthermore, after controlling for all these individual-level effects, the study finds that those who are living in the region where the local government spends more money for the elderly residents' welfare tend to, on average, feel less depressive. The study also finds that the gap in depressive feelings between old women living with and without their husbands significantly shrinks due to the local government's welfare expenditures for the elderly.
