키에르케고르의 아담타락의 신화, 불안과 절망의 관점에서 코울리지 읽기

국문 초록

이 논문은 코울리지에 나타난 불안, 죄의식, 두려움, 절망의 정서들을 키에르케고르의 불안과 절망의 개념에 입각하여 고찰한 것이다. 코울리지에 관한 수많은 논문들, 비평서들이 있음에도 불구하고 코울리지의 거의 대부분의 시에 나타난 논쟁 적인 주제들, 특히 죄와 벌의 문제, 그리고 그에 따른 죄의식, 고통, 두려움, 절망감 같은 것들은 아직 명확히 규명되지 않은 채 남아 있다. 이 논문은 코울리지 시에 나타난 그러한 모호성을 규명하고자 키에르케고르의 불안과 절망의 개념을 코울리지에 나타난 죄의식, 불안, 절망 같은 정서를 이해하는 틀로 사용한다. 키에르케고르는 불안과 절망은 인간이라면 가질 수밖에 없는 근본 기분으로 상정한다. 그는 아담의 원죄와 두 정서를 연결시켜 고찰한다. 그에 따르면 아담은 선악과를 따 먹지 말라는 신의 명령 하에서 따먹지 않아야 하는 자유만을 직면한 채죄를 범할지도 모른다는 엄청난 불안을 느낀다. 이러한 불안은 본인은 의식하지 못할지라도 신이 아닌 피조물이 직면할 수밖에 없는 정서이다. 아담은 그 불안에서 도피하고자 선악과를 따 먹는 죄를 범하고, 그 죄의 결과는 타락이며 신과 같은 존재가 아니라는 자의식이다. 그리고 그와 더불어 절망이다. 키에르케고르는 아담의죄는 그 결과 후세 인간들까지도 타락하게 만든 역사적 사건이 아니라 되풀이 되는 인간 타락의 유형이라고 말한다. 아담이 그러한 것처럼 인간들도 같은 유형으로 죄를 되풀이한다는 것이다. 즉 한정된 존재로서 인간은 불안한 존재이고 불안의 상태에서 죄를 범하며 그 죄로 말미암아 절망한다. 그리고 그러한 죄는 증폭되어 다시 불안과 절망의 악순환에 빠지게 된다는 것이다. 코울리지 역시 아담을 인간 타락의 대표로 보았고 타락의 결과 한정된 존재라는 자각 때문에 불안과 절망을 느낄 수밖에 없는 존재로 본 점에서 키에르케고르를 예견하였다. 그의 시작품이나 산문에서 보이는 불안, 죄의식, 절망의 감정의 모호성은 바로 키에르케고르가 진단하는 인간 조건으로서의 불안과 절망의 정서와 맥을 같이하며 그의 산문과 시작품 ｢잠의 고통｣, ｢림보｣, ｢느 플뤼 울트라｣,에 그리고 ｢카인의 방랑｣에 나타난 불안, 두려움, 고통의 감정을 그와 같은 측면에서 살펴본다. 그런데 키에르케고르는 깊은 인간성을 소유한 사람일수록 절망 또한 깊은 것으로 파악한다. 그리고 절망은 한편으로 자기를 철저히 버리고 신에 귀의하는 계기가 될 수 있다고 본다. 그러한 점에서 코울리지의 극도의 고통과 절망감은 그가 하나의 실패자 이기보다는 깊은 인간성에 대한 반증일 수 있을 것이다

영문 초록

This essay examines the sense of uncertain anxiety and despair in Coleridge’s writing from the perspective of ierkegaard’s notion of anxiety and despair. It is not too much to say that almost all the argumentative subjects of Coleridge’s poems, among them those reflecting his sense of guilt, anxiety and despair, still remain unsolved. This essay tries to explain the uncertain agony found in Coleridge’s poetry and other writings by considering Kierkegaard’s notion of anxiety and despair as a human condition. Kierkegaard argues that Adam’s Fall should be taken to be a type of Human Fall rather than being the cause of it. Faced by the infinite freedom of having not to eat the fruit of Good and Evil, Adam is overwhelmed by anxiety, from which he chooses to escape by eating fruit. However, the point at which he eats the fruit becomes the point at which he commits a sin, namely the Original Sin, which simultaneously becomes the point at which he senses a feeling of despair. This sin of Adam is subsequently repeated in and amplified by his human descendents. The anxiety Adam initially feels, Kierkegaard argues, is replicated in human when they face the possibility of committing something prohibited. Kierkegaard proposes this human condition to be the one that is anticipated by Coleridge. In terms of Kierkegaard’s diagnosis of anxiety and despair, Coleridge’s acute sense of anxiety and despair can be understood to be fundamental human feelings. This essay tries to explain the agony predominant in Coleridge’s poems such as “Pains of Sleep,” “Limbo,” and “Ne Plus Ultra” and his other writings from the point of view of Kierkegaard’s notion of anxiety and despair. However, Coleridge’s sense of anxiety and despair does not make him a failure or a cast away. Rather it seems to testify that he is what Kierkegaard considers a great soul who is keenly conscious of a deep sense of despair as a finite being.
