노인의 성적욕구에 대한 시설종사자들의 태도에 대한 조사 연구

국문 초록

노인에서는 성적욕구가 소멸된다고 생각하고 또한 불필요한 것으로 취급하는 일반적 편견과 태도는 일반인 뿐 아니라 보건의료전문가에게 까지 만연되어 있다. 노인관련 인력들은 노인을 둘러싼 사회적 환경의 주요 구성요소이다. 따라서 보건의료인력들의 성에 대한 태도는 노인 일반에 대한 상담능력에 크게 영향을 미치게 된다. 노인의 성적기능 및 성적관계의 변화에 대해 노인 스스로 변화에 준비하여 적응해 나갈 수 있는 사회적 지지체계로서 노인인력들이 갖는 태도는 매우 중요한 요인일 것이나, 우리나라에서는 그러한 인력을 대상으로 노인에 대한 성에 관한 인식이나 태도를 조사한 것이 없다. 본 연구는 노인시설에 종사하는 인력들의 노인의 성에 대한 태도가 노인의 성적관심이나 활동에 영향을 미칠 것이라는 전제 하에 그들의 노인의 성에 대한 경험 및 태도를 알아보기 위한 목적을 갖고 이루어졌다. 자료수집은 2명의 간호사가 1개 노인시설에 종사하는 14명의 종사자를 대상으로 직접 면담하였으며 면담시에는 반구조화된 설문지를 이용하였고, 대화내용은 이후 분석을 위해 기록되었다. 결과에서 응답자들은 일반적으로 노인의 성적 본능이 남아있다고 보았으며 이를 실제 경험을 통해 인지하고 있었다. 이들의 진술에 따르면 시설 내의 노인들에서의 성적인 표출은 연령이나 건강상태와는 무관하게 매우 다양하게 나타나는 것을 알 수 있다. 이런 사실은, 인력들이 적절히 대처해야 할 경우가 빈번할 것임을 나타내준다. 그러나 노인들의 성적 표출에 대해 응답자들은 대부분이 매우 부정적인 태도를 보였으며, 대처하는 방법도 적절하지 못한 양상을 드러내었다. 뿐만 아니라 시설에서 노인들에게 성활동을 허용하는 것에 대해서는 대부분이 반대하는 입장을 보였다. 본 결과를 통해 간호사를 비롯한 노인인력들에 대한 노인 성관련 프로그램을 개발해 나가는 것이 필요함을 제안하였다.

영문 초록

It is widely accepted by not only ordinary people but also public health or medical experts that the sexual desires disappear in elderly people and are not important to them. Staffs in homes for the aged are one of the major factors in social environment which surrounds the aged. So their attitudes to the sexual desires of the aged affect their consulting activities in a great amount. The staffs are also very important in that they are a backing system which helps the aged recognise changes in sexual functions and relations and adapt themselves to such changes. But their consciousness and behaviour about the sexual desires of the aged has seldom been investigated. The main purpose of this survey is to find the experiences and attitudes of the staffs in the homes for the aged about the sex of the aged. It was conducted on the assumption that their attitudes greatly affect the sexual interests and activities of the aged. Fourteen staffs of one home for the aged were interviewed in the survey. Half-structured questionaire was used in the interview and dialogues were written down. Two nurses in that home for the aged assisted the survey. The survey result shows that most staffs perceive the sexual instincts of the aged through their actual experiences. According to them, the aged in that home express their sexual desires in very diverse forms regardless of their age and health condition. The staffs are frequently required to deal with such desires adequately. But most staffs have a very negative view to the sexual desires of the aged. Their method of dealing with such desires also seems to be improper. Moreover most staffs oppose the permission of sexual activities of the aged in that home. From the survey result, this study suggests that the staffs in homes for the aged need to understand the sexual desires of the aged much more and the education programmes in that topic are helpful to them.
