A Study on the Expectations and Level of Satisfaction of NNESTs in an MATESOL Environment

영문 초록

With the increasing number of non-native English speakers seeking admission into TESOL programs in the United States, there are many issues to consider. This study selected non-native English speaking teachers (NNESTs) with the purpose to identify the problems that occur in a Masters of Arts in TESOL program (MATESOL) practicum. This study stipulates the expectations of NNESTs in preparation for their practicum. MATESOL students were given a questionnaire that measured their expectations and the outcomes of their personal practicum experiences. The study found that the main problems were 1) a lack of guidance from mentor teachers, 2) the amount of time in which students had to complete the practicum, and 3) communication conflicts with English students. In contrast to their expectations, many MATESOL NNESTs were disappointed with their practicum experience and made suggestions so as to avoid obstacles for future NNEST practicum students. This research is relevant for prospective MATESOL students, students about to take a MATESOL practicum, and curriculum developers who wish to improve the student satisfaction during the practicum experience.
