초등교과서에 재현된 노인에 관한 연구

국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 초등학교 교과서에 '노인'이 어떻게 재현되고 있는가를 살펴보는 것이다. 교과서의 내용이 국가의 관리아래 발행되는 현행 교육제도에서 교과서는 우리 사회에서 보편타당하다고 여겨지는 노인에 대한 통념을 읽을 수 있는 유용한 장(場)이다. 이 연구에서는 <국어>, <수학>, <도덕>, <사회>, <실과>, <체육> 교과의 1학년부터 6학년까지의 77권의 교과서를 담론 분석하였다. 주요한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 노인은 한복, 쪽진 머리, 수염, 보따리와 배치되었다. 둘째, 학습주제가 전통, 친절ㆍ봉사ㆍ돌봄, 통일과 이산가족, 가족윤리ㆍ전통윤리일 때 노인이 자주 등장하였다. 그러나 공중질서나 공중위생 등 시민윤리를 설명하는 장면에 노인은 없거나 소수만이 등장하였다. 또 노인의 물리적 공간은 주로 양로원과 노인정, 시골로 나타났고, 시간적 공간은 과거와 함께 배치되었다. 이러한 배치는 노인을 초등학생과 뚜렷한 경계를 지닌 비일상적이고 수동적 존재로 만들었다. 또 노인의 개인적 경험이 드러나지 않아서 노인은 획일적 집단으로 묘사되었다. 교과서의 노인에 대한 이러한 배치는 우리사회의 노인에 대한 통념이 반영된 결과이다. 노인을 이해하고 노인과의 소통을 도모하기 위해서는 교과서의 노인이 공경 받고 돌봐야 할 존재로만 재현될 것이 아니라 노인의 경험과 관점을 공유할 수 있는 장이 교과서에 제공되어야 한다.

영문 초록

This study is an attempt to analyze the ways of representation of the elderly in elementary textbooks. By virtue of the mechanism of publication and distribution under the control of government, the national textbooks tend to embody the stereotypes on the old people in Korean society. The present study analyzes the discourses on the elderly which appear in 77 textbooks(from the first grade to sixth grade). In the first place, the elders usually wear Korean traditional old-fashioned clothes. Second, the elderly often appear when the aim of the lesson is learning 'Korean tradition'. Third, the old are generally associated with the subjects such as 'kindness,' 'reverence,' 'caring'. Fourth, old people are mostly buried in grief over their family members who were dispersed and separated in Korean War. Fifth, while they are mostly associated with family obligations and traditional moral codes, the elders are not mentioned in the discourses on the public morals or the public hygiene. Sixth, the elderly are represented to live in the countryside, not in the cities. As a result, the elementary schoolbooks tend to regard the elders as passive in everything and remote from the ordinary living, thus making them totally different from the young people. In addition, their personal experiences are also excluded from their representation, which reproduces the stereotype about them as a fixed and unified group. This analysis therefore leads to the suggestion that elementary textbooks provide the opportunity to share the experiences and the points of view of the elderly with elementary students, in order to improve generational communication and understanding.
