대학 복수전공의 노동시장 성과 분석

이 연구는 4년제 대학 졸업자(의약계열 제외)의 복수전공 현황을 파악하고 대학 복수전공이 졸업 후 노동시장 성과에 미치는 영향을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위하여 2008년 대졸자직업이동경로조사 자료를 사용하여 복수전공 여부와 복수전공 조합이 괜찮은 일자리 취업 여부 및 월평균 임금으로 나타난 취업의 질에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 분석하였다. 분석결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 의약계열을 제외한 4년제 대학 졸업자 중 16.4%의 학생이 복수전공자이고, 이들 중 34%가 경상계열을 복수전공으로 선택했다. 둘째, 복수전공자는 일반적으로 인문계열 단일전공에 비하여 괜찮은 일자리 취업확률이 1.2배 높고, 인문계열 및 경상계열 복수전공과 경상계열 및 자연계열 복수전공 조합은 인문계열 단일전공보다 괜찮은 일자리 취업 확률이 각각 1.4배와 2배 높았다. 셋째, 복수전공자는 일반적으로 인문계열 단일전공에 비하여 2.7% 높은 임금을 받고, 대학 고정효과를 통제했을 때 4.1% 높은 임금을 받았다. 특히 인문, 자연계열 전공자가 경상계열 복수전공을 하면 임금효과가 두드러진 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 교육계열 복수전공은 경제적으로 효과적인 선택이 아니었다. 따라서, 인문, 자연, 예체능계열 전공 학생이 졸업 후 노동시장 성과를 향상시키기 위하여 경상계열 복수전공을 고려해 보는 것을 제언하였다.

영문 초록

This study aims to examine how many four-year college students graduate with double majors and to explore the effects of double majors on subsequent labor market outcomes after graduation. Using 2008 Graduates Occupational Mobility Survey, the study analyzed the effects of double major in general and the combinations of double majors on secured employment at large-sized(regular employees are equal to or more than 300) firms and logged monthly earnings. The results are summarized as follows. First, 16.4% of four-year college graduates had double majors and 34% of double majors chose business and economics as their second major. Second, double majors are 1.2 times more likely to be securely employed at large-sized firms. Specifically, arts and humanities majors as well as natural science majors are respectively 1.4 and 2 times more likely to be employed at large-sized firms if they had double major in business and economics. Third, college graduate with double majors in general received 2.7% higher monthly earnings than students who had single arts and humanities major. Controlling for college fixed effects, double majors are likely to earn 4.1% point more than arts and humanities single major. Thus, the effects of double majors on labor market outcomes are very much positive when students of arts and humanties major and natural science major added business and economics as their second major. It is notable, however, that choosing education as a double major does not contribute to increasing earnings. The study suggested that college students majoring in arts and humanities, natural science, and art, music and sports that are less privileged in the labor market consider pursuing a double major in business and economics.
