This study investigates the structure of English periphrastic causatives formed with have in comparison with its make counterpart. Evaluating the interrelations between agent-oriented adverbs and agency (Pylkkänen 2002; 2008, Kim 2012), I show that agent-oriented adverbs do not serve as a rigorous test for detecting the structural unit of VoiceP. I propose that causative have must select for verbal structures that correspond to VoiceP, with supporting evidence from ellipsis and the possibility to embed a passive. In this sense, have causatives behave in parallel with make causatives, which are attested to be Voice-selecting (Tubino Blanco 2011). The two causatives, however, differ in two respects. First, causative have is strictly Voice-selecting, unlike causative make. Second, the two causatives differ in the type of the verbalizer of the matrix clause - have is associated with vBEJ make with vCAUS.
