국문 초록

다수의 사람들에게 은유는 시인이나 문학 작가가 사용하는 표현의 방식으로 인식되어 왔다. 은유가 우리 일상의 언어에 내포되어 있으며, 인식을 하든지 하지 못하든지 간에 끊임없이 사용하고 있다는 것을 아는 사람은 매우 한정된 소수의 사람들뿐이다. 외국어로서 영어를 학습하는 학생들이 매일 접하는 영어 중 다수의 관용적 표현들은 원어민들이 대충 만들어낸 것이 아닌 은유적인 하나의 체계이다. 이러한 은유적 체계는 문화와 밀접한 관계를 맺고 있기 때문에 비원어민교사의 경우 개념에 대한 이해도 그 개념에 대한 교수방법도 어려울 수 있다. 이에, 이 논문의 목적은 두 가지이다. 첫째, 교사가 외국어로서 영어를 학습하는 학생들에게 은유체계 중 하나인 방향은유의 개념을 이해하도록 하는 지도 과정을 보여준다. 둘째, 또 다른 은유체계인 구조은유의 개념을 설명하고, 이 은유의 주요개념인 하나의 사항에서 다른 사항을 경험하고 이해하는 것을 교사가 수업에 설명 및 적용하는 상황을 보여준다. 본 논문을 통하여 많은 외국어로서의 영어를 공부하는 학생들이 어렵게 생각하는 방향은유와 구조은유를 주제로 내용을 자세히 다루어 보여준다. 은유는 문화 중심적이고 따라서 다른 문화권의 비원어민 교사들에게는 본 원고에서 제시된 교수방법들이 다소의 의미가 있으리라 본다.

영문 초록

Metaphors have been believed to be means of expressions of poets and/or literary writers. Only a limited number of people have understandings that metaphors are embedded in our everyday languages and we are using them constantly with or without recognizing them. EFL students are often forced to memorized such metaphorical expressions without understanding what those mean. Because those expressions are culturally oriented, a number of nonnative English instructors experience difficulties in teaching them. Given that, the purpose of this paper is twofold: 1) to demonstrate an instructor introducing the concept of orientational metaphor to the students in class; 2) to present an instructor teaching structural metaphor and explain the concept of understanding and experiencing one kind of thing in terms of another. Through the discussions of this paper, exemplary lessons and examinations have been demonstrated covering orientational and structural metaphors which many EFL learners have found them difficult with. Because the metaphors are fairly culture-oriented and many non-native EFL teachers have little knowledge in how to teach them, this teaching demonstration paper may be useful in the field of EFL learning and applied linguistics.
