중국 근대 량치차오(梁啓超)의 불교 문명모델과 중국불교 고유성 문제

국문 초록

량치차오(梁啓超)는 1900년대 초 새로운 중국 문명의 건설을 고민하는 과정에서 불교의 중국화를 하나의 모델로 삼았다. 또한 그는 불교 중국화 과정에 대한 연구로 중국불교의 고유성을 탐색했고, 그것을 중국사유의 고유성으로 확대하려했다. 1920년대 량치차오는 『기신론』을 평가하면서 '조화'와 '회통'을 중국불교의 특색으로 규정하고 그것을 중국사유 일반으로 확대한다. 하지만 필자가 보기에 중국불교의 고유성은 '초월적 실재 지향의 심성론'이다. 이 경향은 『기신론』뿐만 아니라 가장 중국적인 종파로 취급되는 천태종, 화엄종, 선종 등에서도 뚜렷하게 보인다. 중국불교의 이런 경향은 송명유학 등 중국사상사 일반에까지 강하게 영향을 미쳤다.

영문 초록

While Liang Qichao was grappling with ways to construct new Chinese civilization in the early 1900s, he set Sinification of Buddhism as one model. He explored the uniqueness of Chinese Buddhism in his study of Sinification process of Buddhism, and expanded it to define the uniqueness of Chinese thoughts in general. In 1920s, when Liang was evaluating the Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana, he described "harmony" and "unity" as the defining characteristics of Chinese Buddhism and extended that interpretation to cover the overall Chinese thoughts. However, in my opinion, unique characteristics of Chinese Buddhism is the Mind-Nature Theory directed toward the transcendental reality. This tendency is distinct not only in the Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana, but also in Buddhist schools that are often described as being uniquely Chinese, such as Tiantai, Huayan and Zen schools. Such tendency in Chinese Buddhism strongly affected the history of Chinese thoughts in general, including the Song and Ming Dynasties Confucianism.
