인도불교 출발에서 보편성

국문 초록

불교의 기원은 인도 역사와 문화라는 지역적 특수성(particularity)을 배경으로 한다. 하지만 인도불교가 현재까지도 인도 이외의 인류에게 변함없는 공감을 불러일으키고 있다. 이는 인도불교의 특수성 속에 보편성이 내재해 있기 때문이다. 불교의 기원을 살펴보면 그 출발에서 진리의 보편성의 문제를 강하게 제기한다. 그리고 이후 주류불교의 전반적인 역사는 이러한 보편성을 잃지 않으려는 노력을 보여준다. 또한 인도불교의 보편성은 이미 인류 역사 속에서 증명되었다고 볼 수 있다. 세상에서 가장 오래된 종교로서 다른 종교처럼 강압이나 폭력에 의하지 않고 전해지는 지역마다 자연스럽게 수용되어 현재까지 생명력을 발휘하고 있는 것이 그것이다. 불교는 진리탐구에서 이러한 시대적 상황에 따른 당시의 모든 세계관과 가치관을 총체적으로 점검하고 비판하는 것으로 출발하였다. 즉 석가모니붓다는 기존의 다양한 세계와 인간의 근거와 본질에 대한 견해와 그 인식 방법에 대한 검토와 비판을 한 후 새로운 진리관과 그 실천을 제시하였기 때문이다. 이러한 이유로 불교는 흥기한 후 약 500년에 이르면 아대륙의 거의 모든 지역을 석권하는 것은 물론 아대륙을 넘어 중앙아시아, 동아시아 그리고 동남아시아 전역으로 전해진다. 다시 이러한 인도불교는 전래지의 특수한 지역적 또는 문화적 특성에 따라 실로 다양한 전개를 보여준다. 그렇지만 여기에는 인도불교의 보편성에 바탕하고 있다. 현대사회에 이르러서도 불교의 보편성은 마치 '오래된 미래'처럼 불교에서 구하는 경우는 바로 이 때문이다. 또한 2600년 전에 흥기한 불교가 미래에도 시대와 장소를 초월하여 보편성이 논의될 수 있는 이유라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The special characteristics of Indian Buddhism originated from the history and culture of its sub-continent. Buddhism is one of the oldest religions in the world and spread beyond India without violent clashes between the new religion and the aboriginal ones to almost the whole Asian continent. As the religion has developed in their respective countries, its certain aspects were emphasized in each locale while it has generated a wide variety of interpretations and practices. However, although the term "Indian Buddhism" is often used today to distinguish it from other Buddhist traditions, Indian Buddhism has served as the theoretical and practical foundation for other Buddhist traditions. Thus, when Indian Buddhism is compared to other Buddhist traditions, differences in climate and geography made different religious practices and thus those adaptations in practice resulted in doctrinal changes. It might be easily argued that the universal characteristics of Indian Buddhism are pretty well revealed through the development of Indian Buddhism in various Asian nations. It was discussed in this article that Indian Buddhism already contained the characteristics of the universal nature even in its start and Indian Buddhism has constantly and sympathetically responded to different times and places. The three universal characteristics of existence, a central doctrine of the Buddha, founder of Indian Buddhism in particular and Buddhism in general, was adopted to vindicate this article's subject. So, this article examined how the universal nature in the Buddha's teaching has played a vitally important role in the history of Indian Buddhism throughout Asia.
