조선후기 중국 불서의 유통과 사상적 영향

국문 초록

조선후기 중국 佛書의 간행과 유통, 서책의 전래가 미친 사상적 영향을 시기별로 검토하였다. 먼저 16-17세기 불서 간행의 경향성을 승려 교육과정인 履歷課程의 정비에 초점을 맞추어 살펴보았고, 17세기 전반 조선불교의 法統 수립과 관련하여 부처의 일대기와 불교사를 수록한 『釋氏源流』의 간행 사실에 주목하였다. 그리고 1681년 중국 嘉興大藏經의 우연한 전래와 유통에서 비롯된 18세기 화엄교학의 활성화, 이력과정 불서를 중심으로 한 私記 저술의 성행에 대해 정리하였다. 이어 강학과 교학 연구의 성과 위에서 이루어진 19세기 선 논쟁을 선과 화엄의 위상을 둘러싼 논의로 해석하였고, 19세기 후반 이 후 중국 불서의 유입과 그 특징에 대해 고찰하였다. 특히 吳世昌이 소장했던 근대기 간행 중국 불서의 사례를 소개하고 19세기 말과 20세기 초에 편찬된 『法海寶筏』과 『禪門撮要』를 들어 유입된 중국 불서가 영향을 미쳤을 가능성을 제기하였다. 중국 불서를 포함한 불서의 간행 양상과 그와 연동된 시기별 경향성, 사상 면에서의 성과를 통해 볼 때 조선후기 불교를 침체와 퇴보의 관점에서 바라보는 시각은 재고되어야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

In the latter half period of the Joseon dynasty, Chinese Buddhist texts were vibrantly circulating inside Joseon. Publication and circulation of them, and their philosophical influence upon the Joseon Buddhist community are what are primarily examined in this article. Examination of the 16th and 17th centuries focused upon analyzing how the publication of Chinese Buddhist texts coincided with the trend of modification which was being made to the Buddhist educational process. Then, examination of the 17th century's early half focused upon the publication of 『Seokshi Weon'ryu/釋氏源流』, which was a text that contained the biography of Buddha as well as the general history of Buddhism, as the publication went forward during a time when the Joseon Buddhist community was trying to establish its own legitimate lineage of past Buddhist figures("Beobtong/法統"). Also examined here are the revitalization of the Hwa'eom studies in the 18th century, sparked by the introduction and circulation of the Chinese Ga'heung Grand Sutra(嘉興大藏經) in 1681, as well as the boom of a new trend called "private documentation"("私記") of certain Buddhist texts that were related to the Buddhist Education process. The Zen debates of the 19th century are interpreted as a controversy that was staged over the issue of the status of Zen and Hwa'eom. The Chinese Buddhist texts that were newly introduced to the Koreans in the latter half of the 18th century are also examined. The Chinese Buddhist texts that were published in the modern period and was in the collection of Oh Se-chang/吳世昌 in particular are examined too as it seems most likely that they did have certain influence upon the publication of 『Beob'hae Bobeol(法海寶筏)』 and 『Seonmun Chwal'yo(禪門撮要)』, both created in the ending days of the 19th century and the opening of the 20th. Considering the circumstances which witnessed frequent publication of Chinese Buddhist texts in Joseon and the successful outcome of such events, the previous understanding of late Joseon Buddhism which labelled its history as one of recession and regression, should be reviewed and rectified.
