국문 초록

이 논문은 『제중감론』에 나타난 관음사상의 특징에 대해 살펴보려는 것이다. 크게 세 분야로 구분해 관음응현의 방식과 목적, 관음응현의 논리체계, 각 종파의 사상이 융합된 관음의 본질 등으로 살펴보았다. 그리고 이 논문의 전체적인 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째 『제중감로』에 나타난 관음보살의 응현은 自覺과 자비행의 실천으로 설명할 수 있다. 진여법신의 자각은 일체중생은 누구나 평등한 법신을 지니고 있으며, 존귀한 존재라는 사실에 대한 자각이다. 그리고 시간적으로나 공간적으로는 무한대의 관계 속에 살 수 밖에 없는 존재란 사실을 자각하고 일체 중생에 대해 자비를 실천을 강조한다. 이때 관음보살의 응현은 유신론적인 속성의 보살이 아니라, 자각한 관음수행자 자신의 자비행을 통해 구현되는 사회적 실천의 형상화 내지 자기동일성이다. 관음과 수행자 자신의 일체화를 통해 관음보살이 응현하는 것이다. 둘째 『제중감로』에 나타난 논리 형식은 체용론을 기반으로 하고 있다. 체용론을 기반으로 감응사상과 성기사상이 융합되어 독자적인 관음응현의 논리를 구축하고 있다. 여기서 체는 진여법신이고 용은 일체의 존재 내지 자비행의 실천이라는 점에서, 개개의 존재는 그 자체로 존귀한 가치를 지닐 수 있게 된다. 그러면서도 본질과 작용을 이분법적으로 구분하는 것을 방지하기 위해 비지쌍융론을 전개한다. 비지쌍융론 역시 체용론의 바탕 위에 있지만 무집착의 기반 위에서는 전개되는 실천적인 관음사상이 되고 있다. 셋째 『제중감로』는 다양한 형태의 종파사상이 융합되어 있다. 유심정토, 선사상, 화엄사상이 『제중감로』의 관음사상을 심화시키고 있다. 진여법신을 자기관음이나 不變의 속성으로 이해하는 등, 기존에 유행했던 다양한 고급이론을 활용하고 있다. 그런 점에서 본다면 각종의 종파 사상이 융합된 관음이라 정의할 수 있다. 넷째 『제중감로』에 나타난 관음보살은 중생구제를 중시하며, 그것을 완성하기 위해 노력하는 실천성이 강하다는 점이다. 자비행의 실천을 강조한다는 점에서 이조 후기의 사회적 불안을 연상하게 되지만, 그것보다는 전통적인 선사상이 지니는 관념적이고 탈사회적인 흐름에서 탈피하려 한다는 점에서 주목할 가치가 있다.

영문 초록

This paper considers the characteristic of the thought of Avalokitesvara in 『Gwanseumbosal-myoung-sihyeon-jejunggamro (觀世音菩薩妙應示現濟衆甘露)』 (Avalokitesvara' mystic revelation for the deliverance of sentient beings as like nectar, from now marking as Jejunggamro) on 3 points of view; 1) the form and aim of the revelation(示現) of Avalokitesvara, 2) the logic system of the revelation of Avalokitesvara, and 3) the essence of the concept of Avalokitesvara which is made up different thoughts of many sects. The total contents of this paper are as in the following. Firstly, the revelation of Avalokitesvara can be explained as the self-realization(自覺) and the practice of compassion(慈悲行). The realization to Dharma-kaya means to realize the fact that each living beings is valuable and has a same dharma-kaya. Here, the revelation of Avalokitesvara means a practicer of Avalokitesvara, himself who practice compassion for living beings, not the Avalokitesvara as a god. Secondly, the logic system in Jejunggamro builds it's own the logic to the revelation of Avalokitesvara, which has the theory of substance and function(體用論) as a root, and is fused with the thought of divine response of the buddha and bodhisattva(感應思想) and seonggiseol(性起說, the thought of arising of all phenomena from the essence of the universe). Owning to this point that the substance is the dharma-kaya, and the function means all thing, or the practice of compassion, each living being can have a noble value. Morever, Jejunggamro develops the theory of fusion of karuna and prajna(悲智融合論) to prevent to divide substance and function as mutually exclusive two realities. Thirdly, the thought of Jejunggamro is made up many thoughts of different buddhist sects, as like the pure land thought, Zen, Huayen. So we can understand the concept of the Avalokitesvara in Jejunggamro as one fused with different concepts of many buddhist sects. Finally, the characteristic of Avalokitesvara in Jejunggamro is a taking a serious view of the deliverance of sentient beings, and the emphasis on a practice to achieve it. In the point that the thought of Jejunggamro stresses the practice of compassion, although unstable society in the latter part of Jo-seoun(朝鮮) Dynasty is remined, but in this point that it tries to overcome the trend of traditional Zen thought which is unrealistic and desocial, it is worthy note.
