보조지눌의 선교일치에 대한 재고찰

국문 초록

본 논문은 지눌의 선교일치에 대한 새로운 해석을 시도했다. 현재 학계에서는 '화엄교의 성기문을 수용하여 돈오에 대한 철학적 근거를 마련했다'고 해석하고 있고, 그 결과, 그의 선교일치는 삼문 중에서 원돈신해문에만 적용되며, 교외별전인 경절문과는 모순관계에 있다고 이해되고 있다. 본 논문은 이와 같은 철학적 접근은 지눌이 선과교를 일치시킨 본래 의도를 해석하는 데에 한계점이 있다고 보고, 관점을 확대하여 돈오점수 전체에 대한 수행론적 접근을 해야 한다고 주장하였다. 먼저 지눌이 화엄교의 성기문 뿐만 아니라 연기문도 수용하여 돈오점수의 정당성을 설명했음을 밝히고,(2장) 이 돈오점수의 체계에 따라 선과 교의 수행단계를 '돈오-점수-증오-점수'로 일치시켰음을 입증하였다.(3-4장) 그리고 경절문은 화엄교의 수행단계에 의해 당위성을 획득한 선 수행방법이라는 점을 부각시켰다(5장). 결론적으로 지눌의 선교일치는 불교수행 전 과정을 대상으로 하여 수행단계의 체계화ㆍ표준화를 시도한 작업이었다고 할 수 있다. 그는 성기문과 연기문에 근거한 돈오점수를 보편적 수행체계로 삼아서, 이 체계를 선과 교의 수행과정에 대응시킴으로써 전체적인 수행단계를 일치시켰으며, 이에 따라 각각의 단계에서 효율적이고 빠른 선 수행방법인 삼문을 제안한 것이었다.

영문 초록

This paper attempts to interpret Jinul's Seon-Gyo Congruence Theory in a new way. Current scholastics comprehend that he accepted HwaeumGyo's Seonggi Theory(性起門) and made a philosophical foundation for Sudden Enlightenment. As a result, his Theory is only applied to Wondonshinhamun(圓頓信解門) among Three Gates(三門) and it has been understood that it is contradictive from Gyeoljeolmun(徑截門) which is a esoteric teaching of Seon Buddhism. Such theoretical approach is considered to deviating Jinul's original intention and this paper insists to have practical approaches towards to entire Sudden Enlightenment and Gradual Cultivation by broadening its view. Jinul explained the validity of Sudden Enlightenment and Gradual Cultivation was demonstrated by accepting not only HwaeumGyo's Seogi Theory but also Yeongi Theory(緣起門). In accordance with that, the practice steps of Seon and Gyo are 'Sudden Enlightenment → Gradual Cultivation → Experiential Enlightenment → Gradual Cultivation'. Gyeoljeolmun is Seon Practice Method that has proven appropriateness through the practice steps of HwaeumGyo. In conclusion, it is considered that the systematic and standardized practice steps was attempted by Jinul's Seon-Gyo Congruence for the entire Buddhism practice process. Considering Sudden Enlightenment and Gradual Cultivation that is based on Seonggi and Yeongi theories as a generalized practice system, he made entirely consistent practice steps by reflecting this system to the Seon and Gyo practice process and finally suggested Three Gates which are the fast and effective Seon practice methods.
