『불모대공작명왕경(佛母大孔雀明王經)』에 나타난 주력수행에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

본 연구는 밀교경전인 『불모대공작명왕경(佛母大孔雀明王經)』에 나타난 주력수행의 특징과 그 의의를 살펴보는데 그 목적이 있다. 주력수행은 대개 다라니(dhāraṇi, 陀羅尼)를 포함한 경전의 독송방식에 그 주안점을 둔다. 그러나 이 경전의 주력수행은 독송의 방식과 더불어 결계(結界)라는 의식을 병행하고 설해지는 다라니와 진언의 종류에 따라 그 방식이 달라진다. 이러한 특징은 본 경전이 대승 경전에서의 다라니의 기능을 계승하면서도 밀교의 관상수행과 의식작법으로 발전할 수 있는 요소를 가진 것으로 여겨진다. 따라서 먼저 주력의 의미와 형태에서는 주력수행이 초기불교부터 대승불교에 이르기까지 어떤 의미와 형태로 발전해 왔는지를 살펴본다. 여기서 주력수행은 세속적인 성취와 출세간적인 성취의 양면적 특성을 지니고 있다. 그리고 이러한 양면적 특징은 밀교의 세속적인 성취인 호마법과 출세간적인 성취의 관법수행으로 연계된다는 점을 드러낸다. 또한 『불모대공작명왕경』의 주력 수행에서는 상(上)ㆍ중(中)ㆍ하(下)권에 나타난 주력수행의 방법이 설시된 진언ㆍ다라니에 따라 각기 독송, 억념(憶念), 수지(受持), 칭념(稱念)이라는 차이가 있다는 점을 설명한다. 그리고 주력수행자가 '불모명왕다라니(佛母明王陀羅尼)'와 '불모대공작명왕진언(佛母大孔雀明王眞言)'의 독송으로 인해 얻을 수 있는 공덕의 유형에 대하여 살펴본다. 공덕의 유형은 한편으로는 사람에게 일어날 수 있는 모든 재앙과 환란을 제거하고 수명의 장수와 안락을 말한다. 그러나 다른 한편으로는 모든 곳에 거주하는 이들이 자비심을 일으켜 중생을 이익 되게 하고, 죄와 업장의 소멸로 인한 불법의 깨달음을 내포한다. 이처럼 『불모대공장명왕경』에서의 주력수행은 다면적인 주력수행의 형태를 보여주며, 세간적 성취와 출세간적 성취의 일미(一味)를 이끌어 낸다는 점에 그 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to grasp a characteristic and significance of vidyā power practice in the Ārya-mahā-mayūrī vidyā-rājñī of Esoteric Buddhism scriptures. In general, vidyā power practice places emphasis on reading the Buddhist scriptures including dhāraṇi. However, vidyā power practice of this scriptures combines both reading and boundary mark ritual and its form is different from the type of the dhāraṇi and mantra given explanation in the scriptures. This characteristic means that this scriptures inherits the function of dhāraṇi in Mahāyāna sūtra and considers as having the elements of being able to develope visualization practice and ritual method(Homa). At first, in the meaning and form of vidyā power practice examines it to having developed as a certain meaning and form from the Early Buddhism to Mahāyāna Buddhism. The vidyā power practice of this period has both values, that is to say, both the mundane aim and the transcendental aim. And these both values reveal the connection of the vidyā power practice for the mundane aim and visualization practice for the transcendental aim in Esoteric Buddhism. Also in the vidyā power practice of the Ārya-mahā-mayūrī vidyā-rājñī make clear the difference of the vidyā power practice, reading, smaraṇa, dhārayati, and grahaṇa, according to dhāraṇi or mantra explained in scriptures. And the reading of Ārya-mahā-mayūrī vidyā-rājñī causes good deeds. For example, it removes all disaster, disarrangement occurring in people and gives long life, serenity to them. Futhermore, thanks to its practice, everything or everybody abiding everywhere causes a merciful heart and is beneficial for all living beings and at last all people achieve enlightenment. At this points, vidyā power practice in the Ārya-mahā-mayūrī vidyā-rājñī is including the various forms of vidyā power practice and it has the value of the sameness of both the mundane aim and the transcendental aim.
