동해 지명의 의미‘들’과 영역‘들’의 변화

국문 초록

본 연구는 동해 지명에 간직된 다양한 의미‘들’을 유형화하고 각 지명이 지칭하는 영역‘들’의 변화를 조사한 것이다. 동해 지명의 의미들에는 네 가지 층위, 즉 보통명사로서의 동해, 국명, 해명, 민족 해명이라는 유형들로 구분되며, 시대별, 유형별로 각 지명 의미들이 지칭하는 지명 영역이 하나로 고정되지 않고 꾸준히 변천하여 현재에 이르고 있음을 확인하였다. 대체로 보통명사로서의 동해는 삼국시대, 고려시대, 조선시대를 거쳐 꾸준히 나타나다가 구한말 시기에 크게 증가한 후 해방이후 현대에서는 찾아볼 수 없다. 국명으로서의 동해 지명은 삼국시대 이래 조선시대까지 꾸준히 기록되다가 구한말 시기에 이르러 보이지 않고 있다. 해명으로서의 동해 지명은 가장 일반적인 유형으로 전 시기에 걸쳐 다수의 형태로 존속하였다. 민족 해명의 경우는 조선시대까지 발견되지 않다가 구한말에 등장하기 시작하여 일제강점기에 명맥을 유지하다 해방 이후 현대에 크게 증가하였다. 네 가지 지명 의미들은 시대를 거치면서 각기 다양한 지명 영역을 가지고 있었다. 보통명사로서의 동해는 그것이 쓰인 용례에 따라 신라의 동쪽 바다, 조선 울진현의 동쪽 바다, 또는 구한말에는 아프리카의 동쪽 바다 등으로 각기 다른 지리적 범위를 지칭하였다. 국명으로서의 동해 영역은 시대에 따라 신라국 강역을 지칭하기도 하였고, 이후 고려국 혹은 조선국 영토를 가리키기도 하였다. 해명으로서의 동해 영역은 삼국시대 이래 현대로 오면서 다양한 영역으로 나타나고 있으며, 대체로 현대로 오면서 점차 영역의 크기가 확대되었다. 특히 심국시대 초기 고구려의 동해 영역은 두만강 하구 혹은 함경도 해안이었으며, 신라의 경우 대종천 하구의 ‘동해구’, 즉 경북 경주시 양북면-감포읍 해안을 ‘동해’라 지칭했을 것으로 추정된다. 민족 해명으로서의 동해 지명 영역은 일반적으로 당대의 해명이 지칭하는 물리적인 영역과 일치하며 그 영역에 일정한 민족 정체성의 의미가 부여된 것이다.

영문 초록

This study aims to classify the types of meanings of the Name East Sea (Dong-hae) and analyse the each toponymic territories of the meanings of East Sea. Consequently, the meanings of East Sea are divided into four layers, such as common noun, the name of a country, sea name, and sea name with national identity. I identify that the toponymic territories designated by each its meanings have been constantly changed so far. In general, the record 'dong-hae'(東海) as a common noun had been steadily found in the old literatures, ancient documents, and old maps throughout the period of the Three Kingdoms, Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392), and Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897), and then shown on the largest rise at the Late Period of Korean Empire (1897-1910). After the Liberation from the Japanese colonial period (1945), its record has been disappeared in the present-day. The Name East Sea as country's name had not been shown in the Late Period of Korean Empire after constantly recording throughout Joseon Dynasty since the period of the Three Kingdoms. The Name East Sea as sea name is the most general type, it has been recorded and called throughout all historical periods. In particular, The Name East Sea as a reflection of national identity had not been discovered to Joseon Dynasty, and then started to used and recorded in the Late Period of Korean Empire, and barely remained in existence in Japanese colonial period, finally it has largely increased nowadays since the National Liberation. The four meanings of East Sea have had the each diverse toponymic territories throughout historical periods. Especially, the territory of the Name East Sea as sea name has diversely shown us since the period of the Three Kingdoms, in general, its territory has been gradually enlarged until now. Particularly, The East Sea territory of Goguryeo Kingdom in the early Three Kingdom Period corresponded to the mouth of Duman River or the seashore of Hamgyeong-do province, and early Silla Kingdom's East Sea territory corresponded to the mouth of Daejong Stream, 'Donghae-gu' (the mouth of East Sea, 東海口) located on the boundary between today's Yangbuk-myeon and Gampo-eup. Since then, according to the whole territory's change of two Kingdoms, the sea area named as East Sea had gradually expanded to southward or northward.
