영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to suggest a way for English education development in Korea via investigating the ways for better qualified English teachers commensurate at college level, analyzing the changes of the Secondary School English Teachers' Employment Examination and current in-service English teachers' training programs. This goal is discussed according to the followings: 1) the qualification for excellent English teachers, 2) the curriculum of English education department in universities, 3) the changes of the Secondary School English Teachers' Employment Examination, and 4) the status of in-service English teachers' training programs. Two kinds of survey were designed and 75 secondary English teachers were selected as subjects for the survey. The result of this study revealed the followings: 1) the most important qualifications for excellent English teachers are teaching skills, TEE abilities and the knowledge about the teaching methodology, 2) most participants are satisfied with the curriculum of English education department in universities, 3) most of them are positive toward the changes of the Secondary School English Teachers' Employment Examination, and 4) they recognize in-service English teachers' training programs are helpful for their job especially in team teaching with English native teachers and new trends of English teaching methodology.
