국문 초록

중국 근 현대불교사에 큰 족적을 남긴 허운은 강학 염불 계율 修禪을 통하여 대중을 교화하고, 전통 불교교학과 임제 조동 운문 위앙 법안의 선학의 맥을 이은 중국 선종의 대선지식이었다. 그의 불교 사상은 불교의 모든 수행법이 궁극에 이르는 길이 될 수 있음을 주장하고, 그 가운데에서도 특히 대표적인 수행법으로 참선과 정토의 염불수행법을 제시하였다. 허운은 깨닫기 위해서는 선과 정토를 서로 보완, 내지 兼修해야한다고 주장하고 있다. 허운이 제창하였던 禪淨兼修는 直下에 깨닫지 못하는 둔근기들을 위한 것으로, 먼저 염불로 인연을 일으킨 뒤에 간화의 방법으로 나아가도록 하는 것이다. 이는 禪의 입장에서 정토를 수용하고 있음이다. 그러나 다른 한편으로는 선과 정토가 수행방법상의 차이는 있지만 궁극적으로 지향하는 점이 같다고 하면서, 초심자에게는 선과 정토가 둘 인줄 알지만 깊이 들어가면 결국 하나임을 깨닫게 된다고 하여 禪淨不二를 주장한다. 허운은 당시 거듭된 전란으로 불안한 민중들의 마음을 안심시키고, 나아가 그들을 수행으로 인도하기 위해 먼저 염불로써 인도한 다음 ‘念佛者是誰’의 화두참구를 통해 깨달음으로 나아가도록 이끌었다. 이러한 그의 선정겸수 내지 선정일치의 사상은 이전 시대의 불교사상가들도 언급한 내용이었으나, 그는 이를 수용하여 적극적인 실천행으로 대중화 하였다는데 큰 의의가 있다. 오늘날 허운의 많은 제자들이 중국불교계를 이끌며 선정겸수 혹은 쌍수를 강조하고 있고, 현대 대부분의 중국 사찰에서는 선과 정토를 겸수하는 풍조가 이어지고 있는 것도 허운의 영향이 크다.

영문 초록

Chan Master Hsu Yun(虛雲, 1840~1959), who was a luminary on modern Chinese Chan Buddhism, advocated that all kinds of Buddhist practice methods including Chan meditation could lead to the ultimate truth. He recommended Chan and chanting in particular. In fact, Hsu Yun stated that both Chan and the Pure Land should be complementary or combined together to reach enlightenment. Hsu Yun’s combined cultivation of Chan and the Pure Land was devised for those having dull faculties. With this method, practitioners were made to arouse the cause and condition for the cultivation by practicing the Buddha recitation chanting before advancing on the huatou investigation. In short, Hsu Yun’s method gave priority to Chan while embracing the Pure Land practice. However, the Master stated that even though there is difference between Chan and the Pure Land, both practices ultimately aim at the same goal. This is called the non-duality of Chan and the Pure Land 禪淨不二. Through the combined cultivation of Chan and the Pure Land 禪淨兼修, Hsu Yun sought to reassure the common people who were nervous about a series of wars at that time. Thus, he led people to the Buddhist path by offering them the huatou of ‘Who is the one that is chanting?’ 念佛者是誰, after first guiding them to the Buddhist practice by the Buddhist recitation. It can be seen that Hsu Yun’s thought of the combined cultivation of Chan and the Pure Land, or the oneness of Chan and the Pure Land, was already proposed by his predecessors. Many of his disciples are leading the contemporary Chinese Buddhist community under the banner of the combined cultivation of Chan and the Pure Land. And most of Chinese monasteries today have also integrated their practice into Chan and the Pure Land. I hope this paper will contribute to the introduction of today’s Chan and the Pure Land in China, as well as Master Hsu Yun’s activities
