국문 초록

요가수뜨라(Yoga-tūra)와 니까야이(Nikāya)는 고전요가(Classicl Yoga) 및 초기불교(Early Buddhism) 의 소의경전(所依經뱃)이 된다. 두 문헌에 묘사되는 삼매의 내용은 상당한 유사성을 지닌다. 따라서 이들의 삼매관(三味觀)은 일찍부터 비교의 대상이 되었다. 본고는 그간 이 분야에 관련하여 발표되었던 연구 성과를 아우르면서 새로운 방식으로 두 문헌의 삼매관을 비교ㆍ정리한다. 특히 서로에게서 발견되는 유사성에 대한 검토와 더불어 차이점에 대해서도 구체적으로 다룬다. 요가수뜨라는 무사등지(無伺等至, nirvicārā-samāpatti)에 이르러 진리를 직관하는 지혜(慧, prajñā)가 발현되고 잠세력(行, samskāra)이 제거된다고 기술한다. 니까야에서도 요가수뜨라에서 볼 수 있는 유사한 방식으로 삼매와 지혜(paññā)의 상관성에 대해 언급하고 또한 삼매의 위계를 내세운다. 그러나 니까야에서는 가장 낮은 단계의 삼매인 제1선정에서부터 지혜가 수반되며 바로 그것만으로도 잠세력(sankhāra)이 소멸되고 번뇌(āsava)로부터 벗어나는 것이 가능하다고 본다. 이점에서 요가수뜨라와 니까야의 삼매관은 한편으로는 유사한 측면이 있지만 다른 한편으로는 상당한 차별성을 지닌다.

영문 초록

The Yoga-sūtra and Nikāyas are the foundational texts of Classical Yoga and Early Buddhism. The teachings on samādhi in these two texts have significant similarities. Therefore, the view of samādhi in these two texts have long been a popular subject of comparative studies. Both of them acknowledge that samādhi is needed to obtain wisdom(paññā/prajñā) or to pierce the truth, and that samādhi could remove all defilements of the mind called sankhāras/samskāras. Reflecting on the existing research on this subject, I try to reorganize the various views of samādhi in the Yoga-sūtra and Nikāyas in this paper. In addition, I also deal with the similarities and differences on the aspects of samādhi between these two texts. For example, the Yoga-sūtra says that wisdom would only be revealed and defilements expunged in nirvicārā-samāpatti, which is one of the deep stages of samādhi. But the Nikāyas say that wisdom could be revealed in any stage of samādhi Though in some respects these two texts have similar opinions, in other respects they argue for their own unique perspectives. In this way, I try to compare the embodied meanings of samādhi in the Yoga-sūtra and Njkāyas.
